>>Specs
windows 98 SE
IE 6.0.25
Lucent winmodem
AMD k560
128 mB ram
2 hours online with Xtra helpdesk
>>Whats the Problem
The problem is that once i get on to the net the modem stops operating after about 3 minutes,
>by not operating
i mean the two computers icon stops flashing the bits sent/received stops changing, and if I try to go to a new page i get a message "server not found", when I right click on the two computer icon and select disconect i hear the modem disconnect so it is still connected even though it is not doing anything, I then need to reboot if I want to get on the web again and it is the same story 3 mins then freeze.
nothing else freezes, all other programs on the computer work perfectly well
>>What have I tried
I have been through Internet options and changed various setting as per Xtra advice but to no avail,
I updated IE to the version above,
I also tried installing opera(can't even get on the web) but these made no difference
I checked the driver and windows tells me it is working OK,
I managed to get to windows update to see if there was an updated version of the driver but apparently the one on the computer is the most upto date (1999 driver)
I kicked the computer and stayed on line 7 minutes till it froze, tried kicking it again but it went back to 3 mins again

So i am stuck this is a friends computer i am borrowing and the friend is in Auckland with the installation disks.
So any help would be appreciated
Thanks Nigel

As an alternative emergency backup I have a P166 that has no operating system, that I am looking for a version of Linux to stick on it, but as i cant download anything i can't get a copy old enough to run on it with its limited memory RH 7.1 is too big for it, system Memory is either 16 or 32 Mb I cant remember which and it has a 500 Mb hard drive so if any one in Invercargill has an old version of linux suitable could i please borrow it

102535 2002-12-01 23:37:00 Try slowing your modem connect speed to give a more stable download.
Here's how:
For Win 95 98 ME
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the ISP connection icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Change maximum speed to 38.400
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.

In "Extra settings," enter the string. s38=0-v90=0
Click OK to save changes.
Shut down the computer and restart to activate the changes.

102536 2002-12-02 00:40:00 what sort of modem?

assuming its a pci modem.

I noticed that conexant based modem may not like IRQ sharing. the symptoms fit ur description.

u can move modem to another slot, IRQ maybe still shared but with a different partner.

its possible the modem is faulty.

102537 2002-12-02 09:08:00 I had that problem with my Pent II 266 with an internal modem on Actrix. The problem did not occur with zFree quite as much (ie only rarely) so I guessed that it was something to do with Actrix.

Now have an external modem and the problem has never recurred.
