2002-12-02 22:41:00 | Well, here's the problem... I just bought a nice shiny new HP Pavillion. Don't ask me the details, but it came with nice user-friendly (ie, explains itself far too much) Windows XP. The one I got was the last one available in the shop, so much so, that they had to take it off it's display stand, where it had been sitting the past two months, and put it back into boxes... First port of call once I got the thing wired up, Windows Update, knowing that the computer hadn't been connected to the net, and so such updates wouldn't have been done. Microsoft reckon that I need to download 23 Megs of stuff to make my computer work. As you can probably tell by the fact that I'm making a post here, my computer is in full working order, with my only gripes being slow internet connections (for which I blame Telecom fo splitting the line in my area) and speakers that came with it are pretty bad... Not important gripes about the system, or the OS... The main problem is trying to convince myself to download 23 Megs. It takes about two hours for me to convince my computer to download a 2 meg file, and my net connection doesn't last long enough to receive the whole file. GetRight has been my salvation so far, allowing me to pick up lost downloads, but Windows Update doesn't agree with it, and vice versa. Is there any way I could buy a CD or something like a service pack that'll fix these problems, or get Microsoft to burn the files I need to CD and mail them to me for a small cost? Considering that Windows Update is normally free, I wouldn't be willing to pay much more than the price of a CD, plus shipping. As opposed to buying a later version of Windows and reinstalling. I tell you one thing though, I wonder how Microsoft is going to survive the console wars if all they seem to be able to write is buggy code and updates. Let's not forget updates to updates (no joke, they's like me to download one... HELP ME!!!!

2002-12-03 00:07:00 | I do wonder about 2hours to download a 2mb file though. Telecom is bad in my area too, lines to my workplace are some 30years old, and little possibility of improvement in forseeable future. Nevertheless, 2hours for a 2mb download ... | rugila (214) | |
2002-12-03 08:31:00 | Don't ask me what's going on with the download time, but I wouldn't bulls**t you... also, I'd like to take you up on that offer of putting it onto CD for me, I'll be emailing you some details... Thanks for help. | ambasluv (1414) | |
2002-12-10 01:17:00 | Well, first things first... I was stupid to assume it would be easy to find Chilling Silence's email address... Second, I was also stupid for picking both the software compression and hardware compression options for my modem, which appears to be causing most of my d/l problems... The one that's got me stumped is that Microsoft wanted me to d/l 30 Meg of Service pack, the I d/l'd som little bits and pieces (400 kb winupdate files, that sorta guff) and the total dropped to 1.9 Meg. anyways, it would appear I can get the Service pack on a PC World CD, so I'll save you some money and just buy a copy of the mag. Thanks very much for the offer, very nice to see people willing to help a guy out that they've never even met. | ambasluv (1414) | |

2002-12-10 01:32:00 | >I tell you one thing though, I wonder how Microsoft is going to survive the console wars if all they seem to be able to write is buggy code and updates. There's a world of difference between a console a a PC. In fairness to M$, a console is mass produced, they're all identical. This means that if a games runs perfectly on one it'll run perfectly on all of them, unless it's been modified. PCs vary hugely in specification. Windows XP is expected to run on anything from a PII 300 with 128mb RAM, 4mb PCI graphics card etc to an Athlon 2600+ with 128mb Radeon graphics card and goodness knows what else. How many millions of variations can you imagine? It's not until they fall over on someones PC that a bug gets noticed. This is why M$ built in the ability to Windows to send a report about a problem to them. It's these submissions which actually help develop the updates. As to why does it always seem to be M$ products, well I guess that's 'cos the produce more than anyone else.

2002-12-10 01:33:00 | Oh yeah, it came with polkaudios, it just depends on your defenition of good... I like some low end in my music... I got the bad polkaudios... Not the big bastards that mount to the side of the screen (those were excellent back in the day...) but I got some litle things about 4 inches high total... Sound almost as good as the PC speaker used to do on my 486... Gonna rig my PC up to my 600W stereo... That should do the job... | ambasluv (1414) | |
