102950 2002-12-03 09:50:00 Are you sure it wasn't running a scheduled scan or something. They are enabled by default IIRC. One of the first things I do when I install NAV is to turn off all the **** like that. -=JM=- (16)
102951 2002-12-03 13:43:00 I have the whole System Works 2002 running on my PIII 450 computer and processor usage is well below 20%. I think that you have another issue there. Vince Vince (406)
102952 2002-12-03 14:02:00 Susan, if you think 2002 is slow, wait till you see 2003, saw it this afternoon on a brand new system, specs I am un-certain of and it was sloooooow, you could almost make yourself coffee while you waited for it to do something. Not being my system I did not/could not fiddle but I might have been missing something or maybe it is now so big that it has become this slow. My 2001 version fair rips along by comparsion. duckyduck (197)
102953 2002-12-03 19:12:00 Hi Susan.Am I missing something? Please enlighten.I thought from posts here that Nortons and AVG couldn't run together,or any two AV's?

102954 2002-12-03 19:49:00 only uses cpu when scanning in XP pro .
on idle its very low cpu usage ? Sure its not your system restore working in the background or a auto defrag program ?
kiwibeat (304)
102955 2002-12-03 20:00:00 Neil: no, NAV and AVG are not playing together at the same time. They are both installed but I disable one before enabling the other. Currently have NAV banished to the corner with its back to the room and now the PC is smiling. :-)

kiwibeat: If there was something else like system restore running in the background then why does the CPU simmer down immediately NAV is disabled?

NAV goes bonkers and must be scanning full time but what and why? Surely the default settings should have it humming along nicely but even if I disable email scanning, live update and all the rest of it there is no change. The only thing I haven't tried is changing the scanning options from "all files" to selected files because I don't know what should be in that list. On my (very old) NAV on the (very old) computer I had "all files" enabled without any problems.

102956 2002-12-03 20:42:00 Have you tried dissableing, auto protect, incoming email and full system scan seperatly (and turning the auto live update off), and then turning them on one by one?
perhaps you could pinpoint the part in nav, thats using all the cpu?

102957 2002-12-03 21:20:00 very werid susan. i've had 2002 and now 2003 and both have been "lite" on resourses. no real slowdown at all. unless its an XP thing as i use w98se.

considering your problems with updateing i would try removing 2002, cleaning out the leftovers and reinstall (its a pain, i know).

102958 2002-12-03 22:21:00 I would agree with Tweak'e

Running NAV2003 on a 733mhz ME bog standard Packard Bell. Absolutely no slowdown from when I was using NAV2001 or AVG.

Maybe Billy sent your 'puter one of his little buddies as an early Xmas pressie.

102959 2002-12-04 01:06:00 Well guys, whadda ya know? I killed EVERYTHING within NAV, rebooted then one by one enabled all the page defaults. To my utter surprise and amazement the damn thing is now purring like the proverbial cat. :O

No longer is the HDD "busy" light going berserk and the CPU does its usual Sunday stroll in the park routine like it should. Don't ask me why or how but it has fixed itself. *rolls eyes*

You guys are all priceless with your suggestions and feedback. Where would I be without you all? :x

Now, what will The Beast throw at me next?? :O :D
