103022 2002-12-03 08:51:00 I run Windows ME - although I know it has a rep. for being buggy I have found it a fine OS in my year or so of using it...

however about 4 days ago things changed (the same time I installed photoshop 5 - although I have now uninstalled and the problem remains so I don't know if this had anything to do with my predicament).

Now after about an hour things start going weird - the mouse indicator is all over the place - btw as soon as I log on I get EXPRESSMSBB will now close appear - and if I'm on the internet it logs off and I get error 630 on trying to log back in...I have to switch off at the wall and then it is ok for an hour or so until the same thing happens again...

I have searched with various AV sftware,+ the klez tool ,+ the trojan cleaner and all say I have no viruses/worms etc (this after disabling ME system restore), the only thing brought up was JS NOCLOSE>EXE which I deleted (and I fear I had had this for months as I had to dwnload a popup stopper )...

first does the above info give anyone any idea of what my problem is?

is my only hope uninstalling my whole OS and then reinstalling?

(and if so any links of the best way to do this wd be appreciated)

thanks very much...

103023 2002-12-03 09:17:00 This problem also occurs in Win 2000, it can be a problem with the mouse driver, try re-installing the mouse drivers or better still look for an update. Is this by any chance a Genius optical mouse? cyberob (2679)
103024 2002-12-03 09:29:00 Hi Artpepper,
This might be of some help to you.

If you have just installed a program and would like to return your computer to return to the state your computer was in before you installed the program, Windows Me has a feature called System Restore. System Restore allows you to undo (or "roll back") a change that caused instability in your system.

If you would like to use this feature, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
You will have to go to Microsoft.com & look for ME. I thought that the links were going to show up but they didn't.

103027 2002-12-03 22:48:00 Thanks guys

another point - when the PC starts to go weird I noticed the time on lower left slows down so a minute takes about 15, if it goes at all ...

and yes I installed Photoshop 5 and added a scanner just before this problem occurred so I think logically that is what the problem is...I have uninstalled photoshop (no fix regards my problems sadly)- shd I also uninstall the scanner software ?(I didn't think this small programme wd cause any problems with my OS and btw yes I know ME is buggy - yet I have found it fine and I repeat this is a new prob))

thanks all

Regards the system restore fix so kindly advised how exactly to fix it?

103028 2002-12-03 23:03:00 thanks - disregard above

I just did the system restore - seems ok now - though perhaps a little early to tell - feels better anyway.

Now I tick disable system restore again , right!

103029 2002-12-04 00:38:00 sadly the same thing ocurred - cut off from the internet after an hour and when trying to get back on getting error 630 - I have since tried to uninstall the scanner - it went up to 96% but stopped there- system froze. (Yet the mouse problem and clock stoppage did not occur this time - progress at least!)

On rebooting I find the scanner is there on screeen but is uninstalled (one gets the refers to a place that is not there, maybe on yr hard disk message) - good.

maybe the problem had to do with the Twain connection which used to be connected to my printer (it is an old scanner a mustek 1200 CP) and what COM port it was using - shd this somehow effect the modem and thus explain the 630 error?

I am hoping things will be back to normal. Will keep you posted.

BTW I think the NOCLOSE virus was a red herring - it is not malicious and I guess I'd had it for months (it is not actually a virus per-se just keeps accessing porno sites thus my pop-up stopper which fixed things)...at least I don't think it pertained to my problem....

thanks guys - this is a great local resource - and I'm learning much...

cheers

103030 2002-12-04 03:00:00 uninstalling the scanner seemed to do the trick

and adaware lavasoft tool fixed the MSBB>EXE problem

the NOCLOSE "virus" was deleted using the trendmicro online "housecall" software

you really can find all you need to know on the net!!

PC is going fine as of the last couple of hours

thanks to all who replied . . .
