102815 2002-12-02 23:14:00 i know this has probably be talked about b4..
but just wondering
as i have a dvd/cd-rw (dvd player and cd-rw combo drive)
i am real tempted to use a 4.7gb dvd-r cd and write on it coz of its juicy size...but, can i actualy use a cd-rw to write? or does it gotta be a dvd rw drive? and that i got to apparently save up 4?

102816 2002-12-02 23:19:00 Sounds like you have a DVD drive, that reads DVD's and reads and writes CD's.

You will need a DVD-RW drive, they are currently about $1,000+ I believe.

Ummm... sorry dude, but your combo drive only writes to cd-r... it can't write to any dvd recordable media.

AFAIK, combo drives are generally dvd read only, unless otherwise specified.

102818 2002-12-02 23:21:00 you will need a DVD writer which costs about $800 robsonde (120)
102819 2002-12-03 00:17:00 DVD-R is OK for some tasks, but I think generally the media (even the RW) are pretty overpriced, and the drives are still ridiculously expensive. Keep in mind also that if a DVD-R fails, you lose out quite a bit of $$. Much better sticking to CD I reckon, then waiting until DVD-R becomes a bit cheaper. honeylaser (814)

Sounds like what we were saying about CD-R about 6 years ago :)

Yeah, and it's taken 6 years for it to be as viable as it is today. Mind you, DVD writers were around 3k 2 or so years ago. We were going to import some Panasonics, and minimum quantity was around 100.
