Thanks in advance.
Paul.

103249 2002-12-04 06:40:00 No, no "step up" is available.

All the core elements are identical between Home and Pro, its only areas of security levels of user access, dual processor support and support for corporate lans in XP Pro in the main. (those things that are more suited to corporate use)

103250 2002-12-04 07:02:00 So it would appear I would not be gaining anything by going to pro for my single pc home use?

103251 2002-12-04 07:03:00 Speaking of which GF, is it worth paying the extra to go XP Pro, or is XP Home sufficient for most users?

103252 2002-12-04 07:10:00 The core is the same .

XP Pro has a few additional features when compared to the Home edition:

If you have a wireless LAN at home (or work), then you may need XP Pro .
Likewise if you need to connect to a Windows domain server .

Multiple CPU support . Some motherboards have a socket for a second CPU; some support more CPUs .

Mobile and Remote Desktop support . With Remote Desktop you can operate a remote PC as if you were sitting in front of it .

Encrypting file system . If you format a drive as NTFS then you can choose to encrypt its contents .

Offline files and folders . If you connect to an office LAN remotely and want access to certain files after you have ended the connection, you can keep a local copy of such files .

Administrative benefits such as roaming profiles, remote software installation and group policies .

103253 2002-12-04 07:15:00 And Baldy, for home users like us, we need the features of XP Pro as much as a third nostril in my opinion. For once MS may have got the product right, and targetted for the market correctly. I run a business on XP Home, as I need none of the "features" of Pro. Simply it would not add any benefit for me.

You can see how people get into problems with the smaller range of security levels in XP Home, how many problems would they get with permissions in XP Pro?

It is not any faster (but, I wonder, given the encryption available if it could be slower in some cases?)
