2002-12-04 00:53:00 | I am sitting at a PC that had Windows 98 installed about two weeks ago. Now, it is displaying some weird behaviour. In Explorer, if you double click on a folder in the right hand panel, it opens the find window. If you right click on the start button, it only has FIND as an option (not explore or the others you normallyget). Also, from the start menu, you can't run control panel or printers from the settings menu. It says "Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied." From Explorer (which isn't on the start menu either, I would add, but that can be fixed I think) it will run control panel and all the items (except the printers option, which does that standard file association problem). This makes me wonder whether we have a file association that has been screwed up somehow, Any ideas, people? (It's not my PC, I didn't do it, it was Vesna). Robo.

2002-12-04 01:33:00 | According to this article on microsoft.com The problem lies in here: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DRIVE\SHELL In the associations on this machine I only have an action for find, not one for open. I can't tell if this is normal or not. Can someone do this on their Win98 PC and tell me if they have more than find? 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Folder Options. 2. On the File Types tab, click Drive, and then click Edit. {about here, all I see is the find option, so it has to be the sodding default, anyone got open?} 3. If "Find" is in bold, it is the default action. If it is not in bold, click Find and then Set Default. 4. Click Set Default to remove the default (using the Set Default command on the default action removes the default). Click Apply. I hacked and added open with c:\windows\explore.exe as the action but it opens it in a new window. I reckon I'm getting close. Anyone got any suggestions? robo.

2002-12-04 01:35:00 | It sounds like someone has given the PC a policy profile to use. (But probably not likely) That causes the error you stated in the printer control panel if access to the printers has been removed. I have used these in schools with win95/98 but they can be real tricky to get going and even more to remove! Or maybe the registry has become corrupt. Have you run a thorough scandisk to check for bad sectors on the HDD?

2002-12-04 02:35:00 | Hi Robo, this is what is in the find subkey of the key you quoted in my Win98SE: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find\ddeexec] "NoActivateHandler"="" @="[FindFolder(\"%l\", %I)]" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find\ddeexec\applica tion] @="Folders" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find\ddeexec\topic] @="AppProperties" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find\command] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\Explorer.exe" You could try copying this reg file and merging it into your registry and see what happens. Of course, all the usual fine print disclaimers apply :) In the edit window of my File Types-drive, are 2 entries saying "Drive Information", and also "find". Notice also that silly PressF1 has put spaces between letters where it shouldnt after pasting into the Reply window. You only see these when previewing the post, so these will need to be checked for when copying and pasting to make a reg file. Cheers

2002-12-04 03:23:00 | I have the folder name somewhere in my room to put the control panel into the start menu. When I find it I'll post it. I use windows 98 and I have had no such problems. Anyway I'll go and try to find it. Brendonny

2002-12-04 03:36:00 | That would be good. Hacking the registry is not something I am willing to let the user (Vesna) do on her own. But I think I can handle it. robo.
