103486 2002-12-06 09:31:00 Peter, I think this would only be correct if the originating exchange was caller ID equipped, and not all exchanges in all countries are as far as I am aware.

Hence the comment above sometimes people see a number on caller ID and sometimes not, when its from overseas.

103487 2002-12-06 09:48:00 I spose it's up to the quality of the telco . However . . it's a toll call, there will be records .

The caller display on my cellfone tells me a bit . ½of telecons mobiles come up as either "call" or 00000 . Text messages come in as from an actual number . There are exchanges that have only come to spec in the last few years . Mokinui exchange, where my son lives, has only just got clever enough to be able to display the callers number .

I wonder if there is software that can read the (non)number and deal with the call acordingly?

Generally calls from anonymous numbers get ignored if i am at all busy .
My attitude is that those who hide can just call me back when i have the time .

103488 2002-12-08 20:48:00 Hey Billy T

I emailed my brother-in-law at Telecom and this is what he said:

"I have confirmed that it is a huge job to do this and often the international operator will not/cannot find out the details anyway - you can imagine sprint in the US with 40 million customers trying to find a number called!"

"I suggest another option is to have call minder put on the line number and then at night turn the line onto zero rings and then delete any messages in the morning."

Hope this helps!

103489 2002-12-08 21:06:00 At least the technology to help isn't too far away: Article (www.hi-tech.co.nz). Perhaps soon you will be able to block all international calls from coming through to your business line (assuming of course that you don't get many real international calls!). honeylaser (814)
103490 2002-12-08 21:35:00 I've seen software like that.. Needs a Fax/Voice/Modem... and it picked up my friends calls... He could set it to divert to voicemail, or even for the PC to become the mailbox for the night. Quite nifty actually. Free software that came with his modem, I'll try to find out the name or it for ya, just in case :D Chilling_Silence (9)
103491 2002-12-08 21:39:00 Thanks everyone for your help.

Looks like I will have to use the timer switch option to disconnect the line during antisocial hours. In fact I won't even need a timer as I already have a master switch that turns off just about everything in my office when I shut down for the night.

I'll sniff a few volts off a plugpack powering something else and use some spare cable pairs to take it to micro-relay in my my comms hub.

It will be a doddle to hook up and that will end all calls outside civilised hours! Low-tech answer to a high-tech problem. :D

Cheers

103492 2002-12-08 22:22:00 An alternaative suggestion.... Throw the thing of the hook and accross your desk at nights! I'm thinking you will notice that in the morning, even if your as brain-dead as i am first thing.

Either way, dont forget to get an answer phone of some description, so the calls get answered, and the telcos get to take $$$ of the annoying caller(s) :D

103493 2002-12-08 22:38:00 Have you tried simply leaving it off the hook in the office, and putting it back on when you get in in the morning? Works for my parents! Chilling_Silence (9)
103494 2002-12-09 02:11:00 Funny thing Chill, I just can't bring myself to leave it off the hook.

I can't understand why, it's a bit retentive in fact but there you are, we all have our weaknesses. I'd rather open the line, which is exactly the same thing of course!

We've gone call-free these last few nights so maybe they've given up. Perhaps it was a distressed Nigerian trying to give me money :^O

Cheers
