103330 2002-12-06 04:59:00 Hi I dwnloaded a win95 bootdisk from bootdisk.com (3.x didn't work at all) and it did boot into "banana" but no drives were detected - but ofcourse there're drives there - why isn't it detecteing?

this is with no. 46 HD installed (in CMOS)- yet still when I go to the "auto-detect Hard Disk" menu it isn't detecting it...

confused? you shd be:)

I tried the fdisk/mbr as u suggested but it came back no record of this or something (can't exactly recall)

any ideas my friend? (btw although I say it has the virus it has never b4 caused any problems like this and I'm not 100% sure it has it) -

I know there are other ways to get the data from the HD but I know this is nothing wrong with this laptp (it passes it's system test each time) just something gone awry in the config. my part :)...and I'm learning all the time - even - dare I say it - having fun

I think I'm turning into a puter geek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

any assistance much appreciated

Perhaps everything is getting a bit tired, it is 11 years old! Id open up the beast and check on cmos battery, listen to see if the hard drive is running, check connections, see if you can see the details on the drive like heads, cyls, etc. and compare with bios settings.
There could be any number of reasons why there is no autodetect, eg. the bios may be wonky, or the IDE controller may be faulty.

Im not aware that the Stoned virus variants affected the bios, only the boot sectors and mbr.

I got what I needed (which was really simply that I was confused about Slave/Master and Primary and Secondary drives) - It was all pretty simple was I was pointed in the right direction :D

BTW, no, I wont be leaving the small HDD in the computer as I will put it back into the old machine which Im pretty sure they will keep as a backup!
