103557 2002-12-05 06:36:00 Hi. Does anyone know if this is a Windows file?

I have Win98 1st ed, and undergoing major pc dramas. One hint I've got is that Safe Mode won't start!

Unfortunately my CD has been left at my bro's after I reinstalled there recently, so I'm keen to know if this has come from a recent software install or not.
Thx.

Well, if it was Pageswap.VXD - yes, but how could we possibly tell when you don't give any file extension.

Hint - If it really has not got an extension, its not a Windows file?

103559 2002-12-05 08:22:00 Yeah right GF - if the DOS error message supplied the extension, then natch, you'd have had it. Let me re-phrase it, just for you... Does anyone know if pageswap.xxx (where xxx could be any extension) is a valid Win98 system file? Greg S (201)
103560 2002-12-05 08:30:00 Pageswap.VXD - yes godfather (25)
103561 2002-12-05 08:42:00 It isnt a Win98SE operating system file(s) as far as I know, (at least its not in my system folder), so it probably isnt a Win98 1ED operating system file either. That is not to say it isnt a valid Windows file :) Terry Porritt (14)
103562 2002-12-05 08:53:00 On the other hand..... it's in win98_54.cab for win98se, wonder why its not on my drive? Terry Porritt (14)
103563 2002-12-05 08:59:00 ..........because Windows is using vmm32.vxd Terry Porritt (14)
103564 2002-12-05 09:39:00 Hi Greg, well after musing to myself a bit, I think you may well need to get that CD back. Pageswap.vxd is one of those vxd files that is incorporated into vmm32.vxd, and you wouldnt normally see it on your system, vmm32.vxd gets built up when Windows is installed.

The fact that you can't start in Safe Mode suggests your system is in serious strife, maybe a bad registry. If the system has only just been re-installed it may be quicker in the long run to do it again.

You could try running scanreg.exe from the dos prompt with a /fix switch to see if that cures the problem, or try restoring an earlier version with /restore.

This site gives a good run down on the vmm32 business:
www.infinisource.com

There is the so-called vxd fix where all the vxd files that vmm32 incorporates are extracted and loaded onto the hard drive, but whether that really does anything is debateable.

Is there any more info you can give as to what is happening?

103565 2002-12-05 19:26:00 Thanks heaps guys.
As to more info, Terry - very difficult due to the enormous range of symptoms - heaps of freezes, during startup, apps loading & running; bsod's randomly, explorer can never go beyond root directory... list goes on. All happened very suddenly on the w/end when I was running a bunch of apps.

Done the /restore thing, and d'ya know no backups were found. Tried to restore my Windows file from D backup, but it froze midway, then decided the media was corrupt on 2nd attempt.

Your suggestions will be worth looking into, and yeah, at last resort this w/end I'll trek round to my bro's and get my disc back. Bummer, cause as you rightly suggested, it's all been reformatted etc quite recently. Ah well, so long as it doesn't turn out to be hardware.
