103317 2002-12-04 20:49:00 Good morning all,
I have been having trouble with a Zoo Tycoon disc, I got it cleaned and apparantly all is fine with it. I can install it and play it now but sometimes when I click on the icon it tells me there is no disc in, when there is!!!

The other problem is that when it is installed I am having trouble doing scan's on my system. I have PC Cillan and it gets half way through the scan and locks up on the Program Files of Zoo tycoon... Not too sure where to go from here.

I have XP and all other discs are playing fine...help

You say you "had it cleaned" therefore this problem may have existed prior, for you to have this done.

By the way, toothpaste is quite effective for cleaning minor scratches from the CD, be very careful not to scratch the label side however, as the data in just underneath the paint. The playing side of the CD is clear plastic, so scratches there can be polished off without touching the data.

I polish the CD with toothpaste on a coft tissue, then rinse off in water, then dry

If the reflectivity of the CD is marginal for your player, there may not be much you can do.

103319 2002-12-05 20:50:00 When you have a disc in the machine and it tells you there is no disc then you have a classic problem that has been happening now for about 2 years. The copy protection on the disc is not being read through properly by your CD/DVD/CDR/CDRW drive.

Usually these problems are fixed by the game developer in the first or second patch for the game but sometimes this does not fix it so you go to the next legitimate fix which is to find new "firmware" for your drive and install it. This type of fix though is not for the faint-hearted and personally I think it so dodgy (you have to identify exactly the make and model of the drive - something which can prove impossible with the bulk of no-name drives sold in NZ to an unsuspecting public) so unless you are a geek do not update firmware.

The unofficial but best fix (it works each and every time with any game giving the error message at launch) is to "crack" the game. The "crack" bypasses the copy protection and hence the problem does not occur. The "crack" can be found with a decent seaarch engine.

Mostly this problem appears in games using "Safedisc" as the copy protection and the people who make "safedisc" are well aware of it and maintain a list of incompatible drives but it is hard to find.
