103745 2002-12-06 08:36:00 Hi there another wee problem concerning the recent partition, on my HP Pavilion 6700, 15GB HDD, 192 Ram, 600MHz processor

Since putting on another partition I don't seem to be able to boot into Linux.
At the startup screen I have:
Linux
windows
failsafe
floppy
Click on Linux and the screen goes black with a line of text "Loading Linux.........." and a flashing cursor
Waited at least 10 minutes to see if anything was going to happen but no, that has happened 4 times now, so I asume something is a miss.
When I done the new partition I let the computer do its thing.

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

Oh BTW I used PM 7.0

103746 2002-12-06 22:46:00 If you can install linux again you can set it to boot from floppy, or use LILO (i think) or some other boot loader to allow dual booting.
I'm not sure if you can change the settings to allow it to boot from floppy, but it is the safer, easier, more sound way to boot.

Good luck

Oh, I didn't see that. You could probably use that to create a boot disk for linux, and that might work:)

103748 2002-12-07 01:30:00 Did you manage to change the partition numbers, so that LILO's table is pointing at the wrong place? . I don't think that should happen, but partitioning programmes are doing dangerous things . Sometimes accidents happen .

You have a choice:
(1) Your CD may have a "rescue" mode, you could try that . It should have image files to make floppies for rescue . (Of course, when you installed, you were given the opportunity to make one :D) .
(2) Try reinstalling Linux: you should have an "Upgrade" option, by which (if you upgrade to the same version), you get to keep everything .

If you make any changes in the lilo . conf file, or modify partitions, you need to rerun the lilo programme . (The code does not read any files; its knowledge is stored inside it . )
