2002-12-06 07:54:00 | Guess you guys (and gal - HI Susan) get sick of "what's wrong with my VPN?" (new FAQ?) Anyway I have found out what has been stopping my VPN access to work from home, but aren't sure just why...hence this message. No one at work has been using the VPN - I haven't told them about it until I got it working (a wise move). Anyway to the problem. I'm using XP Pro at home through a small hub and dyanlink 210 adsl router. Works fine for internet access! But can't access the work VPN - it gets to "registering user name and password" dialogue but times out after 30 secs "invalid user name" etc. But! When I revert to a dial up connection instead of using jetstream, the bloody VPN connects and registers me on the work network...is that weird or what? Any ideas? Thanx in advance.

2002-12-06 08:38:00 | I would try connecting directly with the router (by pass hub) and see if that works. It will either be that the router is restricting those ports. You may need to "pinhole" and/or forward those ports to a particular machine.

2002-12-06 20:41:00 | Thanks Jeremy - I think you're on the right track there. Tried bypassing the hub but no difference. The dynalink FAQ for the router does show (vaguely) how to setup up a pinhole but no port address is given for VPN...does VPN has its own port or is another protocol used?

2002-12-06 21:07:00 | What sort of VPN are you running? Many NAT routers don't support PPTP proxying, and IPSEC doesn't work behind NAT. | BIFF (1) | |
2002-12-06 21:58:00 | As Biff mentioned, the RT210 doesn't support VPN, you'll need to change to RT220 which supports PPTP & IPSec pass thru :D | SKT174 (1319) | |
2002-12-06 23:39:00 | whoa - don't believe it - rta210 won't do it? It's only 4 months old. I didn't check when purchasing but naturally would have thought that any router would allow a VPN to work through it...razzlefruzzle to say the least! Thanks for the help guys, will have to deny myself access to the VPN but at least others using dial up will be ok.
