103861 2002-12-08 23:46:00 all i can think of is that ping has been disabled or blocked somehow. if the network is working why bother fixing it?

BECAUSE I HAVE BUILT A 'FIXED BASED TRAINER' BASED ON A BOEING 747 400 AND IT REQUIRES THE IP ADDRESS TO CONNECT ALL THE VISUAL READOUTS

you may need to remove and reinstall the tcp/ip. make sure there are no leftovers of firewalls and spyware in the system.

HAVE DONE -- NO FIREWALLS ON THE FAULTY COMPUTER AND DISABLING THEM ON TWO OTHERS HAS NO EFFECT

is client for microsoft networks installed? and does each pc have a log on for it?

YES

small trick is to use tweakUI to auto logon the networking and switch primary logon to windows logon.(so windows logons user at startup and tweakUI logons the networking, makes boot up quicker).

WILL TRY THIS

have you got any of the networking unbound?

SORRY DON'T UNDERSTAND BUT IF YOU MEAN PRINT AND FILE SHARING ETC THEN THEY ARE BOUND.

win98 networking can be so much fun

YOU ARE JOKING!!! UNFORTUNATELY THIS PROBLEM OCCURED OUT OF THE BLUE IT HAD BEEN WORKING FINE FOR 6MONTHS

THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP.

103862 2002-12-09 01:42:00 Clarifying

You unplugged the cable from the inaccessable machine and plugged it into a machine with no known problems.
You left the cable plugged into the hub.
You restarted the machine with no known problems.

At the machine with no known problems, you were? or were not? able to ping other machines.

The objective here is to check the LAN - including hub and cables.

Have you attempted to create a DOS boot disk and boot from that before trying to pung?

103863 2002-12-09 02:00:00 I would try setting one PC up with the following:

IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: Blank

BTW, I'd remove all protocols etc from Network Properties and start with just F&P Sharing, Client for MS Networks and TCP/IP. Add dial-up later on if needed.

then setup all the other PC's to use DHCP (Seems to work easiest in my 98 Networking experience).

Make sure that you turn on the HUB first, then the gateway PC (192.168.0.1), and then the rest using DHCP.
I had troubles with my network, it was because I'd had the Gateway turned on and conencted to a HUB, but the upgrading it to a switcwh threw it out of sync with everything til it was rebooted. I then had to add the other PC's to get the DHCP addresses.

Does ICS work on any of them (If its setup?)

Let me know what you think about that idea.

Cheers

BTW, Networking 98 isnt too hard, I've only really had joy thou when using DHCP!
