103979 2002-12-07 06:30:00 Hey Team.

Just recently for no obvious reason my CPU has jumped about 7-8 degrees celcius, it was averaging at about 40.C now it hovers around 48.C

my cpu is a A.M.D Athlon XP 1800+

i dont recall installing any resource hungry applications.
any Ideas?

Thanx

Its summer

Always add the ambient temperature to any rise

103981 2002-12-07 13:24:00 Well I run a 1.53GHZ Athalon like you do... And I agree with 'Godfather'; its summer, the ambient temp will rise a bit, and hence you CPU temp. However 48.C is nothing to worry about.

I personally like to keep my CPU temp under 55 degrees if possible, and would get a bit worried about the fan if them temp rose over 60 degrees, but 48 is nothing to worry about. (AMD's rule... even if they do run a bit hotter than the Intel’s :D).

Cheers

103982 2002-12-07 17:41:00 I ,like you was worried about my Athlon xp 2000+ getting up into the fourties.I have an MSI m/b and found a utilities packet on the installation disk called PC Alert. This utility measures temp and voltages etc. It also gives an option to run something called "cooler PC". By turning it on tha CPU runs over 10 degrees cooler. The only problem is that you have to turn it on each time you reboot.
I don't know how it works but it does not slow my PC.Off course I am not doing anything PC intensive and I assume something is suffering.
Perhaps someone who understands these things would like to offer an explanation. ROBBIE?

103983 2002-12-07 21:09:00 How do you guys monitor the CPU temperature?

I understand that some motherboards have the capability to monitor the CPC temperature but mine hasn't. My mb is Gigabyte GA-6VXE+

Is there other ways to monitor the temperature?

Cheers

103984 2002-12-07 22:52:00 MBM is quite handy for monitoring temps. download here (www.majorgeeks.com) try it, if it dosn't pick up a sensor then your board may not have one. be warned tho. it may cause pc to crash if there is no sensors(compaqs exspecially) in which case boot to safe mode and uninstall.

for atho/duron cooling i use vcool (http://vcool.occludo.net/)

things to note- a lot of newer mobos can use the XP internal cpu diode to measure the temp which is more accurate and a lot higher reading then the older on mobo cpu sensor(sits under cpu).

for those with no mobo sensor or cpu sensor there are kits advailable so you can install a sensor under the cpu and measure the temps.

103985 2002-12-07 22:59:00 lol my athlon XP 2000 is burning a bit at the moment cos its in a warm room in the house it gets to around 60 when pushing it on UT but most of the time it sits on about 55, i wouldn't worry about 48 thats a cool number. LOL i knew someone whose athlon 1800's fan fried and it kept going... the cpu monitor on his case said 'HOT' meaning over 100 degrees (!) and it still worked perfectly with a new fan.

Yes Athlon's are heaps hotter than P4's but oh well. I love my athlon and nothing will ever change that (especially news that the clawhammer with a Nvidia FX graphics card was getting 450fps in UT2003!!!)
