104261 2002-12-08 10:08:00 I am thinking of dwnlding Suse 8 and installing it on my 2nd PC (running 95 - a 808 MB hard drive 480 used)

as I think it is an FTP installation only and the 2nd isn't an internet capable as yet is there a way of easily transfering (networking perhaps)the 2 machines and getting Suse onto the 2nd?

also is there enough room if I partition so I can run 95 and Linux on this 2nd machine?

thanks?

104262 2002-12-08 10:45:00 what is your connection speed... ( and where have you found SuSe to Download from? I WANT IT)

i would recomend downloading or obtaining the disks and installing from them.. there is a huge amount of utilities built into SuSE hence why SuSE8 which i run is 7 disks!

I think if you poke around you will find that network inatallations are considered a waiste of time unless you have good network speed... so forget about the internet unless you have one allmighty fast connection!

104263 2002-12-08 10:48:00 o yes.... SuSE8 is not the distribution for you.. its resonably slick and :( demanding on all resourses including HDD space

Theres a few light ones you can d/load off orcon...

7 Disc's is a heck of a lot of utilities . I thought Suse was a more business user styled distro?

I thought that a 10/100mbps connection would do fine, I've seen it done before!

I'm about to try out Lycoris Desktop/LX linux, looks neato, that's my challenge for the night .

Cheers

104266 2002-12-08 23:21:00 If you post your location, there'll be someone who is close to you with some Linux CDs that I'm sure you'll be able to get a copy of. You might even have a local Linux users' group (check out http://www.wlug.org.nz/ for the Waikato group) and someone there will be happy to help you out.

It's much easier installing from CD than across the Internet, especially if you're on a dial up modem or if you pay per megabyte!

104267 2002-12-09 02:22:00 I think you'll find that Red Hat and Mandrake are more friendly. Youcan get CDs for these cheaply (probably also SuSe) from www.xsolutions.co.nz or www.copyleft.co.nz .

People often have these at trademe.co.nz , too.

104268 2002-12-09 03:22:00 I got mandrake 9 from trademe for only $10 + P&P ($2.50) so it's prolly worth that. I'd suggest RedHat8, which NZ_Liam has for sale on his Linux site! Chilling_Silence (9)

well yes.. it has a few games, but has everything that i could think of ranging from video editing through to webbrowsing and mail servers...... ask me in CF1 sometime and i'll let you know in greater detail!

Artpepper..

I can download SuSE8.1 without causing to much hassle because i am on cable, and a CD's worth of data from a fast server will take me about 12 hours, so i should be able to get it in a week of "overnight" downloads.
I absolutly do not recomend even trying with a dial up connection assuming that is what you have!
