104145 2002-12-09 00:57:00 Hi Tim, it does sound like the battery. My guess is that it only happens when the PC has been off for some time. If it's only been off for a minute or so then it may well boot OK.

The CMOS battery holds the set up information of the computer is BIOS (Basic Input Output System). This has all the information such as hard drives, date, cpu speed, ram speed etc) When the battery is flat it will 'forget' all about your hardware.

The battery may not be under warrenty, even if it is it may be worth getting a replacement instead of taking the whole thing back to the shop(a lot quicker anyway) It'll only cost about $10. Switch off the comuter, look at the mother board and you should see a large flat silver battery, a bit like a watch battery but bigger. Take this to Dick Smiths or similar and they'll sell you another one. Just pop it back in, adjust the settings as specified in the manual and you should be OK. If this continues now you should claim on the warranty.
