| 104127 | 2002-12-08 04:39:00 | Can anyone please point me in the right direction for a free (or commercial but simple) program that locks windows me at startup. I have tried a few but all are bypassed by starting in Safe Mode. I would like to find one that will not allow ME to start in anymode. Thanks |

I think the screensavers that come with Windows ME have an . scr extension . Copy that screen saver to your startup folder so that it starts up when you boot the computer . Now, go to the Screen Saver control panel and set a password for it . The next time you boot, the screen saver will kick in automatically and will prompt you for a password . This is pretty lame security because it is easily defeated, but you have to know a wee about Windows to get around it . If it's just the kids you want to keep out it should do . Restrict Logon Access With Windows 98 & I would assume ME is the same, you can modify the registry to disable the AutoAdminLogon in Winlogon so that Windows will not automatically log the user onto the computer without any credentials . Start regedit & go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Winlogon\AutoAdminLogon . Set the string value entry to 0 to disable automatic logon . A name & password will then be required "BACKUP THE REGISTRY" before trying this one though . |
