| 104047 | 2002-12-07 12:47:00 | As most of the ChatF1'ers know I run a small online store selling Linux related stuff... To cut to the chase; I am looking at stocking the 'Downloadable version of FreeBSD, however I am unsure of its licensing arraignment, I have had a look at www.freebsd.org and found that it licensed under the "GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE" Like Linux is. Does this mean that, like the free downloadable Linux ISO's, I can legally sell the downloadable FreeBSD ISOs? Or are there some other license conditions that would prevent me from selling the ISOs? Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers Liam |

Yes it does seem that is allowed under the GNU; "You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee." Just wanted to double check with someone else to be sure. Cheers Liam |

You can sell CDs with the software on them. What people are paying for is the "reasonable" charge for making the disks, not the BSD software. The commercial operations offer user help, printed documentation, systems set up for particular applications. It's a while since I have looked at the GPL, but I seem to remember it's fairly clear. They wanted to not make lawyers rich. | Graham L (2) | ||
