1323968 2013-01-21 04:53:00 Hi. I have a 4+ yr old Vaio laptop model VGN-SZ79GN running Win Vista. The display has failed when booting up, generating bizarre graphics. Vaio diagnostics suggests the video hardware. I've uninstalled the NVIDIA Gforce 8400M GS driver and it now boots OK but with limited graphics capability. I'm hoping someone can advise ..
- does this confirm the problem is the graphics card?
- if so, can I simply purchase one with the same model number (or are they still specific to manufacturer?) and where can I get this from?
- is replacement a DIY job? (I'm reasonably competent with electronic stuff!)
Thanks

1323969 2013-01-21 23:37:00 GeForce 8400M GS is built on to the motherboard. Your problem most probably seems to be failed video memory which again is soldered on to the motherboard. It is DIY if you can do SMD desoldering/solerding :-) tmrafi (5179)

1323971 2013-01-23 01:35:00 If it's the hardware, it's not worth fixing.

Since Vista was not very popular, and is quite old, it's possible the driver was updated and released with new bugs.

Try an older driver, if one exists.

You might try updating to Windows 7, under the hope that it's not the hardware.

You're backing up before you're experimenting, right? ;)
