1323964 2013-01-21 04:48:00 Hi. I have a 4+ yr old Vaio laptop model VGN-SZ79GN running Win Vista. The display has failed when booting up, generating bizarre graphics. Vaio diagnostics suggests the video hardware. I've uninstalled the NVIDIA Gforce 8400M GS driver and it now boots OK but with limited graphics capability. I'm hoping someone can advise ..
- does this confirm the problem is the graphics card?
- if so, can I simply purchase one with the same model number (or are they still specific to manufacturer?) and where can I get this from?
- is replacement a DIY job? (I'm reasonably competent with electronic stuff!)
Thanks

Go to the nvidia website and download the latest drivers for your card.

1323967 2013-01-21 20:41:00 Laptops graphics replacements is not really a DiY repair, one for the experts I'm afraid. Also you could have achieved the same result by trying safe mode rather than uninstalling the driver.

One thing that occurs is that without the proper driver you get no hardware acceleration so the graphics card is not working as hard. It's possible it's driver related as mentioned, certainly worth a try. Also could be heat related, check all the air vents are not obstructed or clogged with dust. You could give them a quick vacuum (or blow out) but don't leave the vacuum on for any length of time, forcing a fan to spin that way can be very damamging to it.

If none of that works I'd take it to a professional, dismantling laptops is not for the inexperienced or feint of heart. It can take ages just to figure what screws you need to remove and which you don't. If you do decide to pull it apart yourself search youtube for a guide for your particular laptop so you can see how it's done.
