Had a friend ask me today if I could get into their laptop for them as started asking for a password instantly on startup. He said he has never set any passwords of any kind and that the pc had been going fine since he bought it a couple of years ago. Last night it froze and on rebooting, started asking for password?
It will not allow entering boot menu or bios as asks for password instantly regardless of any key being pressed so I am unable to use a password remover.
Searching google seems to say laptop needs returning to Toshiba support.
Would removing the cmos battery fix this or can anyone suggest another way please?

1323518 2013-01-19 08:32:00 It only sounds extreme because its a Laptop. If you read it in its basic form its only shorting the CMOS jumper.

If it were a Desktop PC it would take a few seconds.

Example. If the jumper on a desktop is set to pins 1&2 then 3 is blank, by removing the jumper and sliding on pins 2 &3 it resets the CMOS, Being a laptop theres generally no jumper, so shorting with a paper clip like its described does the same thing. With Laptops theres stickers or covers over everything.

Another example: change cooling fan in a Desktop - open side of case, there it is. Laptop, some you remove a couple of covers, others you have to just about strip the whole thing, just to get to the fan, let alone remove it.

All the manufactures have backdoor passwords so they can get in and charge you $$$,

Have you tried " Toshiba" (without the quotes) as the password ?

Its not mentioned what the model of Toshiba you have is, so Have a read (www.tech-faq.com)

Actually don't have the laptop at present time, friend took it with him.
