New problem.
for some time now the computer has been regularly losing the network printer.
I delete the current default one and reinstall it with the existing drivers(downloaded from the Brother website)and it will work for a few days (if lucky) then loose it again.
Reinstall and all is fine until next time.

Brother MFC 440CN
Working wired through a Cisco Router/modem.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

1323151 2013-01-16 21:22:00 Have a look at something please -- While its working, right click the printer, Printer Properties, Ports tab, select the printer, then configure port. Look at its IP address. Next time it drops it, reinstall it again as you have been, then look at the IP address again, is it the same or different from before. OR does it have brothers own port name ( instead of a IP address from the router)

I have a Lexmark networked attached that does the same thing, for some odd reason it changes the IP address when it feels like it, sometimes a couple of times a day other time weeks, even though its assigned a certain one. Basically its an old printer - past its used date :D It was fine for around 4 years then started playing up. Tried all available upgrades :groan:

1323152 2013-01-16 21:39:00 Have you ever updated the firmware on it?? Looks like its up to version L. See what version of the firmware is on it now

1. Press the "*" and "#" buttons simultaneously.
2. The firmware version is displayed on the first row.
3. The letter in the second position from the left represents the firmware version.

Will try your suggestion. :-)

1323154 2013-01-16 22:53:00 I have found when setting up printers, copiers, etc on networks, is to have them on static ip addresses.
It can save you from this sort of grief.

1323155 2013-01-16 23:12:00 As suggested, it's a good idea to give servers and printers static addresses, but not PC's / workstations.

The confusing part is a DHCP server can be set up to assign static addresses, based on MAC addresses.

In a home, it's typically the router / ADSL modem that runs DHCP and DNS servers. Often it's under a network tab.

Setting up DHCP is a moderately advanced topic. Here's a little background

1323159 2013-01-17 18:49:00 Updated firmware successfully.
Wainui. During the firmware update i had to switch from network to USB link as the update didn't work the first time. When I finished the update and switched back to Network I found it would not print so reinstalled the printer. The IP address was the same before and after the installation
