1323859 2013-01-21 00:30:00 Google can save radius good enof for local driving ... think it covered Wellington up to Kapiti or somewhere .... routing limitations thou if you start without WIFI.

Or .. just use a Android phone and turn it into a WIFI hotspot. Use your tablet to connect to it thru WIFI ......
No cell tower reception - I have a Navman.

1323860 2013-01-21 04:42:00 Maps on phones/tablets/iPods etc, with 3G or an internet connection, suck a lot of battery juice so you wouldn't want to use it for too long unless you can recharge when the battery gets low .

Is NZ big enough to get lost in? The places I want to go visit are way off any cell coverage . Even moving to Christchurch none of us used a GPS to get around when we first came here

That is what I used to think until we got a car GPS for our trip to Europe but now I take "Lucy" on trips, just for fun . I even use it to find addresses around town instead of getting the map out . It is actually very handy being told where house number 163 is in the street as you can then concentrate on the traffic and driving and then finding a parking spot nearby instead of looking for numbers that are hard to see and often not even there .

1323861 2013-01-21 06:02:00 May not need it if you are going between two big cities or to the airport, home/work etc . . . but if there is a road that is sorta familiar but not really we find the GPS really helpful . We don't have to ask Joe/Jane public in the street . We used it last time to a restaurant in Lower Hutt and another event at Upper Hutt . If you are going to be in the city with cell reception, we find the cell GPS easier - it's more carried with you and 3G doesn't cost a lot .

Just get a USB car charger for $15 . . reminds us to try it out, haven't used it since we bought it .

1323862 2013-01-22 02:49:00 Hmm...so an Android phone can be turned into a hotspot? How is that done? I thought you'd have to connect the phone by a usb cable and use the phone as a modem. Winston001 (3612)
1323863 2013-01-22 03:16:00 Bro's Android has the app installed from the factory. Here is a link ...
www.dummies.com

Not sure if you can still accept calls or text .
But yeah .. you can share it in the car with all the geeks going at it with their laptop/tablets :D

Or just download the app ... I saw a few free ones. I don't have an Android myself thou (yet).

1323864 2013-01-22 06:22:00 You can do it through the settings menu, but I suppose an app would make it easier Greven (91)
