1323618 2013-01-19 22:06:00 I want to upgrade the ram in a Toshiba Laptop but I am trying hard to understand the types of Ram.
The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite with one 512mb stick of 2Rx 16 PC2-4200S - 444 - 12- A3 ram.

I guess the important bit is PC2-4200 bit but when I do a search you see all sorts of DDR2 ram listed. Is all this equivalent, the same, faster, slower?
Does anyone have a simple explanation of Ram or a website where you can search equivalent ram types ?

Puzzled Dad.

PC2-4200 = DDR2-533
You want SODIMM (smaller modules designed for laptops)

1323621 2013-01-20 00:09:00 You may want to find what the highest speed of ram your computer can use. Slankydudl (16687)

1323623 2013-01-20 06:55:00 then it gets funky when you find out that it technically isn't Random Access Memory Slankydudl (16687)
1323624 2013-01-20 07:06:00 It's funny stuff. I am determined to know everything about it! ChazTheGeek (16619)

Must be why I understand RAM then.

 That's because the rules keep changing. ;)

On a more note relating to this thread -- Not all SODIMM ( laptop RAM) works on all laptops, even if the speed and other specs are the same as the original. You can sometimes put in a piece of RAM, and it wont detect, or it can actually stop the Laptop from starting.

Yes and make sure it's pushed all the way home as I found when my netbook wouldn't start after upgrading the RAM
