104628 2002-12-09 23:50:00 hey team.

i made a post a couple of days ago saying that my CPU Temp. had shot up a few degrees for no reason. At around about the same time this temp. increase happened i have been experiencing what i like to call the the PC's version of "Seizures". On average every 10-20 mins my comp. keeps freezing up for about 5mins or so.

i am using WinXP

Thanx

Have you tried adding extra cooling to your computer? because sometimes if your computers CPU starts overheating, then that is known to cause lockups and crashes...

If your computers' still under warranty then take it back to the manufacterer, however, if not, then just read this months PCWorld page 127 (It's all about Airflow - Hot Modding), and get a cheap cooling fan from Dick Smiths or somewhere like that (should be $20 tops)

104630 2002-12-10 00:02:00 i have a dual boot with Win2000 Pro and i dont have any probs with that.

and also i have alot of friends who have basiclly the same system as mine and there CPU temps are as the same as mine but there all fine!..

104631 2002-12-10 00:44:00 It could be a hardware problem. XP turns the fan off on my brothers laptop for instance, but earlier vindows versions didn't.

So it would help if you can tell us things like motherboard, RAM, cpu etc.

104632 2002-12-10 01:13:00 here ya go.

SL-75DRV5 (motherboard, Soltek)
256MB DDR RAM
GeForce 2 MX 400
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
60 Gig Barracuda Seagate HDD.

i have just recently filled up one of the partitions on my HDD but WinXP is installed to a different partition. Would that make my System continiously crash?

104633 2002-12-10 01:42:00 I'm no hardware expert, or a PC expert for that matter, but I noticed the other day when I tried a test on my machine that it seized up when the temperature rose. It apppeared to be due to a temperature limit in my hardware monitor (or maybe the BIOS) freezing things when it hit the "ceiling" to prevent it getting hotter. In my case the temperature "ceiling" was set too low and I've raised it since.

I can't remember what temperature you said yours had risen to but that could possibly be the reason your computer is seizing up when your friends' ones don't.

You should still try and make it as cool as possible inside your computer's case - it doesn't do it any good to be too hot.

Well .. not all things are created equal :D even tho u have the same setup as yr friends but not necessary they're from the same batch. Just like some people can OC their P4 2.0 to 2.8 and some only can go as high as 2.6 with the same settings.

So your friends PC might work will in those temp but your might not :(

104635 2002-12-10 02:43:00 From Soltek website:

"Anti-Burn Shield II (ABSII) is a design to enable the overheat prevention function for some CPUs which are incorporated with a protective thermal diode. The latest AMD Athlon XP CPUs are incorporated with such thermal diode and can be protected by this function.

When using the Athlon XP processor on the mainboard with ABSII function, the ABSII is activated whenever the power is on and takes action by shutting down the system at the processor core temperature of 85 degree Celsius and resetting the system when the core temperature of the processor resumes below 75 Celsius.

Thanks to ABS II, the processors are well protected. "

For it to get this hot, I would guess that either the CPU isn't working properly, blowing up instead of down maybe. Or no thermal paste on the CPU die.

104636 2002-12-10 04:14:00 there is Thermal Paste their i put on some Arctic Silver 3 on, i built my own system, i have had the system 4 about 4 mnths and it just jumped from 42-48C 4 no reason..

i think i fixed it, i took my hard drive out of the way of the front fan so it has got a better air flow, and i havent had any crashes coz the HDD has cooled down aswell, seeing as the front fan was blowing the already warm air on to it.

Thank you very much for all your help, i appericiate it very much!

104637 2002-12-10 04:38:00 Your no reason is the ambient temperature of the air. Mine has also jumped from its normal 28 to 38 range to 36 to 44 range. It is because the incoming air that the fans are driving is a lot warmer and more than likely a lot drier and thus cannot remove as much heat as cool/wet air.

No reason to panic with those temps thugh
