2002-12-09 22:26:00 | Season's greetings. When I type the address www.google.com , it simply takes me to www.google.co.nz. I am wondering how to overcome this as I simply want google.com not google.co.nz because I heard the engine is better. Thanks.

2002-12-09 22:28:00 | Its no different as far as I know - but I have a funny feeling it detects your language settings to determine what page it sends you to (.com or .nz). Either way, it should be running off the same doohickey, so it shouldn't make a difference :) | honeylaser (814) | |
2002-12-09 22:31:00 | Hey www.google.com redirects to www.google.co.nz for you to save on bandwith charges (I'd say) however, as soon as you search with google nz it uses Google.com as the search engine... To save the hassle do what I do: www.google.com What this does is it uses google.com to search for Your Query Here - just replace Your Query Here with your question (and have + instead of spaces) CyberChuck

2002-12-09 22:33:00 | Your an Opera user? just over wriete where it says google search near the type with the words you want to search for... done... There is no need to go to google .co.nz/.com its all built in. Anyway, google.co.nz is essentualy just the NZ mirror, which saves on overseas bandwidth and means your isp will be able to hang on to a bit more coin to make better service rather than give the coin to telecon .Clueless

2002-12-09 22:33:00 | Try using ICQ Lite (With searching up the top) or Phoenix which uses the .Com google! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |

2002-12-09 22:39:00 | Wow, so fast reply. Thanks all. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think internet magazine says google.com is better engine than google.co.nz in one of their tests. Yes I do use Opera as well as explorer and I do use google search box in Opera. It just sometimes I like to use explorer to search google.com too.

2002-12-09 22:43:00 | Depends on whether you're wanting localised content or a 1ms fast loading time or something looney like that. There's not really any difference apart from localised content as far as Im aware! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2002-12-10 00:03:00 | That happens to me too! Whats the difference, at the end, you're still using Google.com anyway. Google.co.nz is only used for people to feel 'at home'. They're all based in the USAs or something anyway. ... Just like what the others said!

2002-12-10 03:00:00 | No. There is no difference in the content. Google have set up a mirror in NZ, which has an exact copy of the database which is generated by their enormous (8000 plus Linux machines) network explorer. The search engine is the same. The data is the same. The only difference is that if you evade the redirection to access the site in the US, you are wasting overseas bandwidth for which your ISP is paying. The costs are passed on to users.
