104423 2002-12-09 08:08:00 Me and my fiddling . . . I doubt anyone will be able to fix this one, but here's the challenge:

When I installed Win XP Home on this new beast it worked great . I have four equal sized partitions with Win XP on C: and my data on F: and to keep all my data in one place I tried moving all the My Documents folders to the F: drive .

Not a good idea - now when logging off my account (administrator) and onto another user's account two error messages come up:

failure: openscmanager and

chipset not supported .

This happens to the user account and the guest account but not mine . Thinking it would solve everything I reformatted the C: drive, reinstalled Win XP, moved my data to the D: drive and formatted F: for good measure . Didn't help one bit unfortunately .

I also notice that the Outpost (firewall) icon in the system tray is a bit "funny" in the other user accounts and there are two errors reported in the Event Viewer, both in the Service Control Manager . In the error messages' Properties it says "The Outpost Firewall Service service terminated unexpectedly . It has done this 1 time(s) . " I don't know if this is a side effect or a cause of my problem .

My Win XP came with the SP1, I have downloaded the updates, installed all motherboard drivers and the Intel chipset "inf_iim_420_1007 . exe" program, all with no change .

Does anyone have any bright ideas as to a solution? Should I wipe all the partitions/repartition and reinstall again <gulp> in case some debris somewhere is causing this?

104424 2002-12-09 08:36:00 You have a minor problem of a major nature.

Error #16 here (edocs.bea.com) describes a possible solution - though my opinion is the database is corrupted.

chipset not supported - wild one there. Could be anything from the soundcard to the CPU.

Easiest - and less time consuming - is to restore from the Gost image you created when you had a stable system.

What! Susan B has no backup!

Oh well - that's your problem.

I'm not sure if I'm correct but I take it the other accounts don't have administrative rights? Some applications might not behave when you've installed them in administrator a/c and then try to use them in another a/c .

Well written programs will ask you whether you would like any other user using it or just this one . . . etc .

Do you know which app is causing this?

SKT174, many thanks for putting me on the right track - it appears to be my Hardware Monitor that is the culprit . Remove that from the Startup menu and the errors don't occur when switching users .

You are also correct in assuming that the other accounts don't have administrative rights, only mine does . The Hardware Monitor isn't in the other accounts' Start Menu and I'm now studying the rules Win XP has in sharing/not sharing programs between users .

Anyway, here's a couple of chocolate fish for solving this mystery for me:
