104401 2002-12-09 04:09:00 I have saved my address book (.Wab) from outlook express to a floppy disk, but now i do not seem to be able to read it (open it from the disk). It seems as if the program associated, by default from the pc, it is not the right one to use. Which one should i use? :8} Sanco (683)
104402 2002-12-09 04:36:00 I think you need to "import" the address book in to your program rather than click it to read it.

If you are using Outlook Express try File; Import; Address Book.

It would pay to copy the file to your hard drive first though - perhaps somewhere that is backed up regularly like "My Documents".

104403 2002-12-09 05:14:00 I am having the same problem with my address book, but i saved it to c.d, i didn't export it when i saved it i don't think, i think i went about it by going into Outlook Exp. folder and finding the .wab and coping it to c.d that way. I have tried saving it 2 hard drive then importing it but it just doesn't show up where it is as an import file????? e.g in My Docs.
And if i try to just click on it to open it - it just opens the new address book with the 2 new address's in?? I am thinking i must have done something wrong??? Does this sound the same as you Sanco? :-(

104404 2002-12-09 06:30:00 How are you both trying to import your address books?

I just did a search for *.wab on the old computer, copied the result to a floppy, put the floppy in the new computer, opened Outlook Express, went to File>Import>Address Book then in the resulting dialogue box browsed to the floppy disk, double-clicked on the address book file, clicked OK and away it went. No problems at all.

This is from a Win 98 machine to a Win XP beast.

104405 2002-12-09 07:17:00 Hey . . .
This problem usually happens to me when I recover from a backup (damn painful things they are), anyway, this is what I do:

Go to: C:\Program Files\Outlook Express delete wab . exe and then copy your version of the address book to the folder, and rename it to wab . exe - did you export via address book or did you just copy wab . exe from the folder above? - doesn't matter both should work

Hope this helps

104406 2002-12-09 09:19:00 I am pretty sure my case is a lost cause as I now feel sure i have copied the wrong thing - i went to (using win xp):
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express and in that folder was an addressbook icon named - wab, addressbook, ms corp. - when i double clicked on this it opened the address book. This was what i copied.
After trying all different variations of import, copy etc... i have now realised what i should have done was go to O.E and export to a text (.csv) and i think i would have been fine - i have just copied the shell of the address book somehow i think. I found this in help:
If your address book is not listed, you can export it to either a text (.csv) file or an LDAP Directory Interchange Format (LDIF) file, and then import it using that file type.
Funny thing was i was following directions from somewhere - maybe that was the way to do it on older o.s's??
So i am a lost cause i think!!! I just hope Sanco hasn't done the same thing :8} - i feel rather silly.

104407 2002-12-10 04:17:00 Hi Susan, I think I did everything by the book really. I went into outlook express, address book, file, export to floppy...et voila' it copied it to floppy successfully, but when I went to import it back, after I re-formatted the hard drive, it wouldn't import it back with the explanation: "The path address book *.WAB drive A: it is not a valid path"
Then I tried to open it so that i could transcribe the addresses with the old pen, but the file association is wrong etc,. Well......I am lost.
My system is, if that could help, Windows ME. (C'mon Linux!!)

104408 2002-12-10 05:05:00 It doesn't look good for either of you, does it? :-(

JZEP: maybe you have grabbed the wab . exe file? That one runs the address book and does not contain your contacts . You need the * . wab file and that one SHOULD be importable .

Sanco: I have no idea why yours won't work, but you could try saving the file from your floppy disk to your desktop and then try importing from there .

The other thing to try is open your address book within OE, add a contact, close the address book and OE then do a search for * . wab . When you find it, rename it with a _ in front of the file name (eg _sanco . wab) and now transfer your * . wab off the floppy into the same folder . Make sure it has the same name as the file that you just renamed (but without the _) . Hopefully your address book will now have all your contacts in it . Good luck . X X (fingers crossed)

You would think it would be a breeze doing this kind of thing . . . . . . . . . . :-(

104409 2002-12-10 08:41:00 Thank you Susan, I really appreciate your help, as always.
Yes, I thought this kind of thing should be a breeze for anyone with any degree of knowledge in computing. But yet again "mocosoft" have let themselves, and millions of users, down with yet another blunder.
Well, never mind, we'll live with it, I suppose. One last question, if I may, Susan. Since I re-formatted, now my windows do not open full screen during my surfing, if you know what I mean :8}. how do I fix that, since I'm sure it's a simple thing to do?
Thanks again for your help Susan. :D

104410 2002-12-10 09:12:00 That's a shame Sanco, sorry it didn't work. :-(

Regarding your IE windows: what I do is open just one IE window, right click on the taskbar and choose "Tile windows horizontally" to make the window larger, then click on the X to close the window. The next time you open a window it should be the same size. If it doesn't, hold down Shift when you close the window next time.

Hope that one works for you. :-)
