104848 2002-12-10 19:40:00 Hi Y'all

Another question from the local town idiot... :p

I'm [eventually] planning on setting up a network server for my [so-called] network... I plan on starting with the budget approach - LINUX :D

So i was hoping for opinions, advantages, disadvantages reccomendations, etc on whether to go with RedHat 8.0 or SuSE 8.0

Your comments appreciated

104849 2002-12-10 19:57:00 AFAIK, RedHat has a very broad helpdesk, although I've only ever used RH8. The installer is a breeze and so simple to understand, yet it still gives you all the options you'd hope for!

Also, If you are going with a X-Window's system, then RedHat 8 comes with KDE 3 which looks stunning. I dunno whether SuSE 8 does, or whether you'd even want a X-Window GUI System, but still.

There's my 2 cents worth

Hope it works out

IMHO stick you hand in your pocket and buy Windows XP. :p

Sorry, but I just had to do that - there, I feel better now ;\

104851 2002-12-10 20:21:00 Yeah

I'm getting XP Prof. for the workstations (the joys of academic pricing)... However Microsoft hasn't released Windows XP servers yet (i don't think they will really - they may just stick with .NET)...

Also, once and when I get enough funds together I'm going to use Windows 2000 (or whatever is out that my budget can afford) as the network server... however that's a loooong way into the future

104852 2002-12-10 20:24:00 suse8.1 is already out yang11 (170)
104853 2002-12-10 20:44:00 Is it the stable release? or still in Beta testing? cyberchuck (173)
104854 2002-12-10 21:36:00 suse 8.1 is now an official release.

www.suse.com
or
its local distributor www.drfloppy.co.nz

in terms of price, SuSe server version(professional) is cheaper. while redhat is the market leader.
I would think people choose one over the other according to their personal likings.

Looking at the SuSE article in this months PCWorld it may be on my list of things to "give a go"..

However as a copy of RedHat 8.0 is in the mail right now, I think I'll stick with that for the time being

Thanks for your help

104856 2002-12-11 02:30:00 The distribution does not matter. They are all Linux.
If you want it as a server, you will be running Apache and SAMBA. You won't be running KDE3. You don't have a GUI running on a server. What for? My servers don't even have monitors or keyboards, let alone GUIs. :D

Rad Hat or Mandrake will do it. I'd prefer RH, but that's what I use most. You certainly don't need 7 CDs worth of applications. There are more people (locally and worldwide) using RH and Mandrake, so the "distributed support" is greater.

104857 2002-12-11 03:35:00 I'm sure I've told you this, but Windows XP Server hasn't been released because there is currently nothing wrong with Windows 2000 Server. Microsoft will probably release Windows .NET Server next and skip XP.
For the case of your question, I'd use RedHat 8.0. with a few updates applied and the KDE Keramik theme with Crystal iconset, as long as you are using a monitor on it.
