104839 2002-12-10 19:10:00 Original question was, why does my colour printer and scanner not work when via the hub but do when plugged into the computer?
My IntelliEye mouse works on all the hub ports. The hub is self-powered. It supports 12M bps as well as 1.5M bps. (A Dynalink USB 104) Still looking for reasons. Help welcome

104840 2002-12-10 22:49:00 havent seen how usb works, but i assume if using some sort of hub then you need to set up an addressing scheme. eg: ethernet uses IP adrress to identify who to talk to. When you plug straight to computer its the only device on that port so it can find it fine.

104841 2002-12-10 23:26:00 From previous posts you operate a dual boot machine.

Is this the case here. What operating system, as you have not divulged that?

If XP, what does your device manager tell you under Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - Universal Serial Bus Controllers

It should show up as a Generic USB Hub or similar

Right click and select Properties.
Under Power, it should show what is connected, and the power properties of each device.

104845 2005-08-05 18:38:00 ok regardless of the age of this thread it might be something folks need to know ....sometimes periphals wont work from a usb hub unless it's an externally powererd hub cause the hub may not be able to supply enuf power from the usb connection for all the devices attached....... drcspy (146)
104846 2005-08-05 23:39:00 some products don't work from hubs reguardless. they have to directly connected to the usb conntroller. tweak'e (69)
104847 2005-08-06 03:38:00 The USB interface is a "standard". That means that there are a number of lengthy documents which (if everyone follows them, exactly) will guarantee that equipment will work when it is plugged into a USB port. And it will work when plugged into a hub.

This relies on designers reading, and understanding the standard. It also requires that they all understand all the details in the same way.

So some equipment will work with a hub. Some equipment won't. Some equipment will work directly plugged into a laptop. Some equipment won't. :groan:

Even more fun comes when people decide that they can "improve" on the standard.
