2002-12-10 19:01:00 | When I try to connect I get the first message saying that I have connected to the remote computer, but this is followed by an "unable to connect" message, suggesting that my password and identity have been rejected . This only happens on one of three computers we have, all using W98 and Outlook Express . A technician has pronounced my modem sound, and it dials telephone numbers all right . However, when I try to send a fax, it fails, though the home copy of the fax prints out perfectly on our machine whether I ask for one or not! I have been through all the xtra settings time and again and xtrahelp have given up the struggle .

2002-12-10 19:29:00 | Hey From personal experience with this problem myself there are quite a few possibilities, however, hopefully this will sort it out for you.. Remove Network Protocols Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and remove TCP/IP Dialup adapter. Close out of the Network Control Panel but, when it asks for a reset click No Remove Dialup Connection My Computer > Dialup Networking and remove Your XTRA connection Now you can reset... Add Network Protocols After reset, go back into the network control panel, add TCP/IP Network Control Panel > Add > Protocol > Microsoft > TCPIP Add Dialup Networking Now, go back into Dialup Networking and create a new connection using the following settings: Connection Name: Xtra - Modem: Modem Name Here - Next Telephone Number: 087303030 - Next Finish Now right click on your connection and click properties: In the General Tab take the tick out of Use Area Code and Dialling Properties In the Networking Tab make sure the Dialup server is PPP, Put a tick in Enable Software Compression, and make TCP/IP the only allowed network protocol Under the TCP/IP settings tab make sure that the settings are: Server Assigned IP - Server assigned name server address, Use IP header compression and Use Default gateway on remote network. Quit out of the TCP/IP Properties but stay in the Xtra Properties Under the Security tab you can put your username and password if you want (leave Domain empty) and make sure that there are no ticks in the Advanced Security settings (Log onto network, etc) Finally, Click OK to save your settings, reset and this should fix it all Hope this helped CyberChuck

2002-12-10 19:30:00 | Create a shortcut to your dialup connection and place it on your desktop Open the shortcut and delete your username and password and retype them Connect, and if it fails note the error message and error number and advise what it is. Your fax problem has nothing to do with your Xtra connection but might indicate a modem problem and the error number you get from the above will help determine waht is happening.

2002-12-10 19:41:00 | <Under the Security tab you can put your username and password> There is no Security Tab in Win 98 connection properties this is in Win ME You need to Select Server types and untick Logon to network,NetBeui and IPX Username and password has to be entered in the connect screen.

2002-12-10 19:45:00 | Thanks JM... Also, have you tried updating your drivers? - I don't think this will be the problem (unless your modem is using Windows standard modem drivers) but it's a possibility CyberChuck

2002-12-11 01:41:00 | Thanks to Jim B and Cyberchuck for the responses Never expected anything so comprehensive or so rapidly. Take some time to work through all this lot! I forgot to mention that in desperation, I reformatted my hard disk and reloaded W98 and other programs yet the error survived all that

2002-12-12 04:08:00 | Hi Cyberchuck and Jim B, I regret that the alterations you listed did not do the trick . But in the course of making them, I discovered that existing records of the password in at least two of the boxes that have to be filled in were corrupted . I have an eight-letter password, and in one case there were only six asterisks, and only four in the other . I have had a suspicion for some time that somebody has somehow inserted something objectionable on this machine, which has survived the complete reformatting - I am by no means knowledgeable but I think that everything that was on the machine before reformatting will still be there waiting to be overwritten? When I tried to connect using the dial-up on the desktop I got the usual message, to wit "the computer you are dialling into does not respond to a network request . Check your server type and setting in the properties of the connection . If problem persists, check with your network administrator . I have been through the modem checks which are offered in the troubleshooting guide that can be opened from that box by clicking on More help, but it did not lead anywhere . Is there any other way I can test the modem other than by trying to send a fax? It checks out all right with the standard checks available on my version of Windows . Maybe I should take it out and give the contacts a good scrub with an indiarubber? thanks again Basil

2002-12-12 04:34:00 | It sounds as if your modem is working OK but just not connecting to Xtra. The error message you describe sounds like error 650 and can usually be fixed by extra settings. Double click on My computer and double click Dialup networking Right click on the connection icon and select Properties. Let me know the modem name in the box at the bottom "Connect using"

2002-12-12 05:17:00 | Hi... I once lost my Xtra dialup connection by clicing on the MSN browser. This had changed the default dial up number to USA...So perhaps check your dialup properties in ontrol Panel - Modems....
