104828 2002-12-10 10:35:00 And i'm scanning now. I can't open anything except things in the system tray, thats how i got online (msn messenger) and i got an IE window through a link in a messenger window, and i got the virus scanner (mcaffee)from the system tray as well. Hasn't found anything yet. Anyway, I had a program called "Reminder" running a few minutes ago. I couldn't close MS Paint, it said something about lack of system memory. So i ctrl alt delete closed it, but that didn't work either, so i closed the reminder program, i have no idea what it is, i've never seen it before.

my system was still running slow so i restarted, and now i can't open anything on the desktop or the quicklaunch bar or the start menu. =\ I'm going to update mcaffee and scan again once it's finished this run. its up to temp internet files and hasn't found anything yet.

The only things I think it could be from is a MP3 i downloaded from www.mp3.com.au, or an mp3 i got off someone on mIRC. (i trust the guy on mIRC) perhaps its something someone else downloaded. uhhh, someone has been to freearcade.com and... matchmaker.com? hmmm, the rest are sites i visited and i trust (ign, gamefaqs, hotmail etc)

Or perhaps its from kazaalite.com NetGuide said that site gave you a spyware free version of kazaa, and clicking on the download didn't bring up a download window, so i put up with the queueing (sp?) in winmx. got my song eventually. yeah, so anyone? (still nothing on mcaffee)

104830 2002-12-10 18:50:00 Hi Adam,
It might be good to also do an online scan from the Symantec site just as an extra precaution, sometimes one might pick up what the other has missed.

104831 2002-12-10 19:16:00 Try this (http://housecall.antivirus.com/) online scanner as well.

Also give AdAware (www.lavasoft.de) a run.

104832 2002-12-11 02:06:00 Reminder
reminder.exe
From Microsoft Money. Reminds you of your bills

Of course this is assuming that you have MS Money installed

Reminder can be removed from the startup if it is there so it only runs manually as required by you.

Start > Run > type in msconfig > Enter > click on the Startup Tab > look for Reminder, I think off memory it will be called that or something very like that > remove the tick if it is in the list > Apply/OK > Restart the computer.

While you are in the msconfig/startup screen you might as well have a look see at what else is loading in the background and remove the ticks from anything you don't want as above. For a good list of info on each item try

www.answersthatwork.com

Just change the letter after tasklist to get to the right page.

104833 2002-12-11 02:12:00 AH OF COURSE!

Somehow, "money:D:D:D" came up in a MSN Messenger conersation. that became a hyperlink. money:.D:.D:.D with the dots removed. i was like !? and clicked on it. it opened microsoft money. that must have been what it was... i haven't seen it since (the reminder program) so its obviously fixed. thanks everyone, i'll do the virus/adaware scans now.

104834 2002-12-11 02:25:00 adaware is running now. what does it mean 42 idenitfied registry keys? Adam_with_HP (2601)
104835 2002-12-11 03:00:00 It usually means that it has identified code written by spyware programs in your registry which are spying on your web surfing habits.

Make sure you have the option in AdAware to backup your registry and then let it delete what it has found. Certain programs, such as Kazaa, will no longer work when the entries have been removed but you can use alternative programs.
