104814 2002-12-10 09:24:00 hey guys,

its that time of year...haha what am i talking about? anyhow, the ole' computer. running windows 98 needs a good ole' clean. Its riddled with spyware and not a virus scanner to be seen (its not my puter btw).

Can anyone recomend any freeware that could rectify (my new word:P) these problems, im about to install AVG (its brilliant) and SpyBot & Ad Aware.
I've cleaned out the temp files by using the faq - safemode, dos, del tree styles.

Are there any suggestions?

Much appreciated, the always gratefull for the wonderful PressF1 buddies...

104817 2002-12-10 19:15:00 Gidday,

toniscleaner works pretty well at cleaning all the bits and pieces
like registry etc, etc. Its a freebee, a search in google will give the
site for downloading.

cheers,
Bob

104818 2002-12-10 19:50:00 I use jv16 PowerTools from,
www.vtoy.fi
which seems to do the job OK
and MRU blaster from,
www.wilderssecurity.com
does that job.
cashesentry gets some internet page faults, at,
www.mindspring.com
does something good,
diskeeper is very quick at defragging, from
www.diskeeper.com

all freeware

104819 2002-12-10 19:55:00 Why not just backup all the data and give it a good ol' reformat and reinstall? I was amazed at how quick my old girl skipped along after one of those.

And while you are at it, a good clean under the cover would be appreciated as well. They get pretty grubby in there quite quickly. :-)

quicker to give it a sping clean. i don't format unless i really have to.

just be a little carefull with jv16 as it still is a little buggy. cachesentry is really good for those who still use IE.

104821 2002-12-10 22:32:00 hmmmm I couldn't say I do any "spring cleaning" I just try to keep it all nice and working all the time.

Just open it up and give it a vacuum every now and again.

Now and again? I have my case open heaps! usually to muck around with hardware though, but it keeps it clean.. no need for a vacuum cleaner!
