104711 2002-12-10 03:28:00 Hey

Recently someone has been installing ICQ lite on workstations over my network (running Windows ME)..

I was wondering if someone could suggest a way in which I could stop them from installing this program, as it really is starting to upset me (mainly because I'm trying to keep my computers as free from unnecessary programs as possible)

Thanks in advance

104712 2002-12-10 03:36:00 You could always put the machines on terminal services? At least that way you have control over what they do, what they have access to, and what changes they can make. honeylaser (814)
104713 2002-12-10 03:40:00 Wouldn't that require a Terminal Server though - their not on my budget sorry - I've disabled access at the firewall for the moment but am looking for a more permanent solution cyberchuck (173)
104714 2002-12-10 03:42:00 Or on second thoughts, you should be able to use MS Policy Editor to lock down/secure users desktops. That should push out registry changes to the machines when the users log on - and you can stop them from doing just about anything. Should stop them installing anything.

Depending on your OS of course, here (www.microsoft.com) is the W2k group policy page on microsoft.com

104715 2002-12-10 03:44:00 If you are running W2k, it should include Terminal Server as a component. You would only need to purchase client access licenses for each machine (except W2000 Pro & XP Pro which include a TS CAL). If you're educational you should get them for free from EDCOM. honeylaser (814)
104716 2002-12-10 03:50:00 Now honeylaser do try to keep up ;) When he said "running Windows ME" I think he meant that he was running Windows ME. Other wise he would have said something like "running Windows 2K" ;) ;)

Glad to be of help :)

Give me a break - its almost 5pm! I assumed as the admin they would be running W2K or NT, and the ME would be on the workstations/users PC's.
