104740 2002-12-11 02:50:00 Try running unrar on its own. "man unrar" will tell you what options to use. I see that's been around for a long time (a library book "learn Suse Linux in 24 hours" has one CD with SuSe on it (and unrar).

It will be something like "unrar -x filename.rar".

BTW, I see you hat the "#" prompt, indicating you were logged in as root. I hope you don't make a habit of that ... I tend to use "su" when I need root privileges.

104741 2002-12-18 07:56:00 OK heres the output of the attempt to get unrar to decompress the photos

Now i'm confused, could anyone give me a hint what to type to make this thing open the rar file, preferably in the same directory?

Ive tried unrar\/home etc and have realised that i am totaly out of my depth

104742 2002-12-19 02:49:00 Syntax. :D

Have a careful look at that help page. The command "x" should not have a hyphen "-". switches have the hyphen. ;-) (I don't think you need the quotes around the file name-- it probably doesn't hurt, but I would leave them off.)

Before I extract things from archives, I usually do a dummy run ... with the "v" command in tar, and it's the same in rar. That lets me see where it wants to put things before it actually does it.

BTW, APC has WinRar and Rar3.0 for linux (These will be trial-period limited), and a .pdf file of their 170 page Linux pocketbook on their cover CDs this month. But I wouldn't bother getting rar. You've got unrar which "should" unpack anything you receive, and there is gzip which will produce MS compatible files, so what's the point?

104743 2002-12-19 06:28:00 agreed.. no point@all..

I want to get unrar understood, simply because i don't like being beaten, and its a bite sized challenge, which is about all i can take on at the moment. No point in making .rar files though.

104744 2002-12-22 00:42:00 I finally i got it to unrar!
yay!!!!!

Thankyou Graham yet again for steering me in the right direction. It seems that
unrar x /location/filename.rar
was all that is needed, allthough it insists on putting the uncompressed files in the home directory, rather than on the desktop where the .rar file is

Now i can handle all the .rar files anyone can throw at me
:D

104745 2002-12-23 05:45:00 OK, so now i know how to run a cammand line to unrar, the next question, is there any way to get ARK to just do it?

What must i do to correct "Sorry, the utility rar is not in your PATH."

104746 2002-12-24 00:59:00 The ark utility is quite correct. You haven't got rar; you have got unrar. The only way to correct that is to install rar. :D

You could try making a soft link, so that the "rar" command actually calls unrar. I can never remember the order of actual/linkname so I always do "man ln" first, but I think it's: cd to the same directory as unrar (maybe /usr/bin, or /usr/sbin ... do "which unrar") thenln -s unrar rarYou will need to be root to do this. This will work only if unrar uses the same commands and options as rar. ;-) (And it won't magically make rar files if you use ark to create an archive).
