105344 2002-12-12 03:54:00 I have a computer that I am trying to fix. When press the power switch, the power comes on, but nothing happens, no beep (the speaker is working), the video card does not initialize (and the fan on it does not power up), and all the panel lights are lit, and do not go out.
The video card and RAM work in another PC also, but I have no other PC to test the CPU in.

The computer is a p3 - it says on the top 533/133/2V
I took this to mean 533MHz, 133MHz bus, and 2V core

The jumper settings on the motherboard are all correct, if the above assumptions are true.

It has 128Mb of ram, and a 32Mb Geforce2 processor.

The computer has just come back from the shop - they said it was working, but it didn't work when my friend got it home. She says it has been into the same shop at least twice in the last few months.

They said something about a warped motherboard, but I have checked it over, and superficially it looks fine.

I am at a loss as to what the fault could be, if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Craig.

105345 2002-12-12 04:09:00 I would say it's the board. unplug everything with only CPU, RAM and display card and see if it fires up. If not, check whether those 3 little lights on the keyboard flash when you 1st press the power switch. If none of this is happening, take back to the shop and ask them to fire it up infront of you.

Next time you might want to ask your friend to tell the shop people to show her the machine is working before she takes it home .

105346 2002-12-12 04:14:00 If the fan on the Video card does not go, it suggests that the 12v rail in the Power Supply may not be active, or the path through the Motherboard is open. No beeps of any sort suggests a dead Motherboard/CPU or Power Supply.

Panel LEDs (What are they?) suggest the 5v rail may be coming up OK, but that won't let it boot on its own.

"Warped Motherboard" could stand for "intermittent fault in Motherboard" that comes and goes with pressure? Not good?

105347 2002-12-12 04:24:00 Thanks godfather - I think i will try replacing the PSU, as it has begun to make a very high pitched whining noise. Do you know how to fool the PSU into powering up without a PC attached so I can run some tests on it??

Panel LEDs (HDD activity LED, cdrom LED, Power LED etc) on the front panel of the box.

Is it possible then to purchase a new motherboard for this computer - or will I have to go second hand - it is a slot ??? CPU (i don't know the number)

105348 2002-12-12 09:05:00 you can turn on the PSU by shorting PIN 14 and 17 on the ATX connector

CHeers

the notch

oooxooxooo
oooooooooo wire the 'x' and the PSU will turn on

105349 2002-12-12 09:06:00 BTW pin 14 should be Green and 17 is Black SKT174 (1319)
105350 2002-12-12 23:21:00 Thanks for your help people, the computer is going fine now - looks like the warped motherboard was a fault invented to fit the problems description - the graphics card fan had been left slightly unplugged, and the chip has fired nicely (too bad i didn't have an egg handy!!). I have replaced the graphics card, and the system is all go again, and has been running all night with all the same hardware.

Cheers,
Craig.
