105164 2002-12-11 19:17:00 I recently reformatted my HDD and reloaded Win98SE. I now have a problem everytime I start from the power button it runs Scandisk (from bad shutdown that appears to be too fast) or hangs part way through booting so that I have to use the reset button.

I have reinstalled the IDE motherboard drivers, and the onboard sound and video drivers from Gigabyte website. Have read their FAQ and tried all the obvious stuff i.e. checked cables, connections, reseated RAM etc.

Final clue : Machine runs ok, but when idle, the HDD LED is winking once every 3 secs or so as though something is trying to get access. (Have run AdAware)

Machine is Gigabyte GA 5SMM motherboard with onboard sound and video, AMD K6-2 500 (Socket Super Seven) with 128Mb RAM, 4.3Mb HDD.

This problem is slowly driving me insane!! Any help much appreciated.

105165 2002-12-11 19:35:00 Hey

Go to Windows Update (http://windowsupdate . microsoft . com) and download the Fast Shutdown patch which will slow down the shutdown (also might pay to get any other patches if there are any)

You can read about this in the Microsoft Support Files ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q187607" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

Otherwise, if you don't want to download updates (I would reccomend reading the Microsoft Support Article though, here's the manual way to remove fast shutdown . . . .

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information
On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility .
On the General tab, click Advanced .
Click to select the Disable Fast Shutdown check box, click OK, and then click OK .
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer .

And this should fix your problem
