2002-12-11 18:58:00 | I have been trying to sort out a problem with connecting to IE6 on my home PC, and decided I needed to remove and reinstall this program. I went through this and found on reboot that the following error message pooped up: "Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. Explorer will now close", and a recommendation that you restart the system. The problem is that the start up has stalled at this point resulting in no desktop, task bar or icons HELP!! What can I do please. I am a beginner in this so answers in plain language would help me. Thankyou | alistera (2327) | |
2002-12-11 19:25:00 | Hey Have you got a copy of the Windows setup files contained on the compuer? Because it seems that Internet Explorer has corrupted shell32.dll (I've done it when I copied shell32.dll over from one computer to another) Boot your computer up in dos by pressing F8 or F5 just before it says Windows is now booting up and you should be presented with a menu that says stuff like "Continue loading Windows, Boot into Safe Mode, Boot into MSDOS or Command Prompt" choose the option to boot into the command prompt Now dependant on your Operating System depends where Shell32.dll will be located - Extracting the file is easy... Finding it's the hard part Once you have booted into dos type: extract /A /D C:\Windows\options\cabs\winXX_8.cab shell32.dll | more (where XX is your Windows version - eg: Windows 98 is 98) Now, this will search through all the cab files starting at winXX_8.cab (press Enter after each screen to continue) Now it will display all the cabs and any finds it make a note of it's number (It should only find one) Now to extract type: extract C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\winXX_YY.cab shell32.dll Where YY is the number of the cab and XX is your Windows Version If this fails could you please post back telling us what Operating System you have (Windows 95, 98, etc) in which it will make this easier Hope this helps CyberChuck

2002-12-11 19:41:00 | Okay This is easier as I have it aswell so we can save soo much hassle :D Bootup into DOS like I told you in the last post, but instead of typing what I told you to type, just type extract C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\WIN_14 . cab shell32 . dll CyberChuck

2002-12-11 20:49:00 | for those who don't like dos commands useing sfc system file checker can be far easier to replace files with. IE can't really be reoved as such. did you try repair or revert it back to 5.5? if you really want to get rid of it iyou will need to use something like IE eradicator to break IE so it can be removed.

2002-12-12 21:56:00 | click on start button then click on run (i assume run is still there with ME, if not u will need to go find it) type SFC in the box, click ok then follow your nose from there. | tweak'e (174) | |
2002-12-12 22:31:00 | I don't think SFC is in Windows ME. Its in XP, and 98 but ME may not have this feature. | godfather (25) | |
