105085 2002-12-11 07:28:00 Hi I have a Soundblaster Pro compatible card and just noticed how bad the sound was. Ive searched for a new driver but that dosen't make a lot of difference(maybe I picked the wrong one?).
It used to be much better AND record greetings messages in Winfax 8.03, but they are so bad I go for the default message instead. Maybe everyone will think I have an American secretary who won't give out my name?? Any help appreciated , Oh yes the Winfax program can't seem to find some codecs, but they are definatly there. Uninstalled/reinstalled and located.

105086 2002-12-11 18:51:00 Hey

Do you have any conflicting devices, as this is the most common problem as the hardware failure.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
Click on the Device Manager tab and if there are any conflicting devices the tree that they belong to should be expanded and have an exlamation mark over the devices image

When you searched for a new driver did you go to the manufacterers website, or did you get them from WindowsUpdate? as WindowsUpdate doesn't always offer the best drivers... (I know from experience). If that fails, have you tried DriverGuide ("http://www.driverguide.com) - it's a forum like driver resource service... You post the drivers you want and [hopefully] someone will come back and find some for you (great for those old, no longer supported devices)

If all else fails... Most people would be happy to have an american secretary working for them :D (just joking - post back and someone will help you)

105087 2002-12-12 07:43:00 Hi Cyberchuck, Nope no conflicts. Its a clone SB(no name) . I Googled for a driver and found heaps, found one from a site that looked as if it knew what it was doing, but no change.
Thanks for driverd guide, I'll give them the once over.

105088 2002-12-12 09:23:00 Exactly what do you mean by "bad sound"?

There could be any number of reasons why you are not getting the results you expect but not even the Press F1 sound gurus can second guess what you mean.

Cheers

105089 2002-12-13 08:13:00 "Bad Sound"
Blurry, buzzy, LOW fidelity, not clear, just distinguishable at a basic level, unable to be heard clearly, difficulty in understanding voice messages, unsuitable to listen to music, so embarassingly bad I will not record record a greetings message on Winfax, spoken through along pipe with a chainsaw in the background, bad.

105090 2002-12-14 02:24:00 Oh. You mean that it's not very good, then. ;-)

Where did you have your microphone connected? If you had it plugged into the "line" input, any output you managed to get from a file recorded that way might easily sound as you have described it so eloquently. :D

105091 2002-12-14 07:08:00 Hi Graham L, YES you have it, quite succinct. No, mike is plugged into mike socket. Frustrating thing is the Windows Multimedia Audio recorder records a reasonably acceptable sound on playback. Other soundtracks are very "dead parrotish". Rod ger (316)
