2002-12-11 19:25:00 | Thanks robsonde, Elephant and Marty - I had tried with no RAM or disk drives, but not without superfluous PCI cards. Could be video I guess. Will try to borrow a card from someone else, but I don't really know any geeks in ALKD yet who would be willing to let me tear their machine apart. I will give it a go tonite with video only, but until I get another card to try my options are exhausted. Anyone in AKLD with a spare vid card lying around I could borrow for an hour or two??? G P

2002-12-11 20:06:00 | Yeah.. Feel free.. I've got a few you could keep actually, 2 Meg PCI Trio 64 V2, not worth much in the real world... I'd say that its your MBoard by the looks of things. Heck, come to think of it, I've got a PC that I pull apart regularly, I used it to test out when things werent working on my new PC (I thought they'd given me a dodgy PSU, Turns out I'd plugged the Reset and the Power in the wrong place on the MBoard!) Anyways, lemme know you're postal addy and I can send it out if u want, I'm in west AK, but work in the city day to day :) BTW, www.qmb.co.nz have a great deal on at the moment coz its christmas time, Excellent pricing on mboards and SD-RAM! AGP cards are especially fussy about being seated correctly, that's why the often have a clip to hold the it in place. Simply pull them out and reinsert them nice and firmly. I had this problem a couple of years ago. When Windows ME came out I could install the upgrade without it crashing on be and I got all sorts of BSODs. Even M$ were stummped and sent me a full version. I tried everything else for months until I tried this and it cured it. | crozier (2004) | |
2002-12-11 20:32:00 | Graham could you pls post your system specs? I had a similar problem but it was hardware specific. It does sound like a vid or mobo problem. | Pete O'Neil (250) | |
2002-12-11 20:41:00 | Been there, done that . My 2nd PC is now back to life with a new motherboard after lots of attempts to get it to show signs of life with the old one . Willing to bet its the MB Graham . . . . | Biggles (121) | |
2002-12-11 21:03:00 | Either the PSU has a fault in it or the MB :( | SKT174 (1319) | |
2002-12-11 21:18:00 | From the looks of it, everybody else reakons its your MBoard. I'd suggest (If you're gonna go AMD, Depends on what you've already got and If you're gonna upgrade the CPU..) this motherboard: www.qmb.co.nz Search google for "K7S5A", Its a very good MBoard, but if you're an Intel Fan, it might not be for you! | 105114 | 2002-12-11 21:37:00 | I've got a machine that pulls exactly the same trick . A blast of hot air directed upon the bios chip from wife's hairdryer does the trick . If the blast of hot air works for you, next time the problem arises try removing the chip and give it a blast, replace, and then boot up whilst the chip's still warm . May save replacing the motherboard if you can procure a chip from somewhere .

2002-12-12 05:13:00 | The hairdryer trick didn't work. I have tried with and without a video card with no diff. I could try a diff card, so chilling if you email your email to gwpetrie at varsity dot co dot nz I will send you my mailing addy. Other wise, I have some unbooked time this weekend if you don't mind a visit. Looks like the mobo I guess - chaintech rubbish with a via kt-7aia chipset. geforce 2 MX vid card, AMD Athlon 1.2GHz CPU, dse al cheapo network card, crap internal modem (conexant variety), 2x HD, 4kus/lite-on cd-rw, crap PSU. Time for a new system, but no money at the mo. I will slowly upgrade as funds allow, but not at the mo. I will check that link out chill, but I might have to go second hand as I am pretty stretched at the moment, an dthings won't be getting much better with student loan payments, and the rest. G P
