2002-12-11 08:12:00 | Hi guys - long time I know, but i have been relly busy, and still have not internet access. i would have liked to have posted a more detailed and friendly first repost, but more pressing problems have arisen. Lately my XP pro machine has given me the odd BSOD, and had also corrupted some files when I tried to copy them (they copied, but the files ende up with zero lengths, and when tring to open or delete, overwrite or move they produced access denied errors. i tried the usual scandisc, safemode etc to no avail. Being NTFS a boot to dos will not help. I eventually tried a reboot to recovery console from the CD to give chkdsk another go from there. I left it running while I made coffe, and upon returning found the screen blank (monitor in standby) and all the lights on the front glowing constantly (CD drive, power light and HD activity light). I could do nothing but hold in the power button to turn off. A repress of the power button returns the PC to this state with no beep or boot. I have tried removing the CMOS batt, RAM and disk drives to no avail. I am out of options. Please reply quickly as I do not know how long I will have access to the net as this is not my PC I am on at the mo. Cheers and hello to all - PJ I have been meaning to call you, but have been run off my feet. I am moving to Wallace Rd in PTT, and will call you once I have moved. Hope everything is well with you and Maryanne. G P

All fans operating, no excessive heat, no funny noises, everything looks normal except no beep, no bios, just pretty lights. G P |

2002-12-11 08:25:00 | This sounds way out of my level of computing. However, chkdsk might have come across an unrecoverable error. I know that you can get lights on permanently if cables are around the wrong way, but this sounds more like something has gone teriibly wrong with your motherboard. It could be the BIOS, but really, if your computer doesn't even show the BIOS check at boot, then something has gone seriously wrong. If you computer is under warranty, you might be able to get the motherboard replaced free of charge, otherwise you might need to buy a new motherboard.

2002-12-11 08:34:00 | I hope you are right - I need a good excuse to upgrade. Seriously though, I don't really want to pay someone to tell me that I need to spend money on my PC, so that is whre you all come in. But I have a feeling that paying someone to find out the prob is the only option. Does anyone know of any good, honest PC repairers in the south auckland region. G P

2002-12-11 08:40:00 | Hi G P, glad to see you back again, we have been wondering what happened to you, but presume the move etc... has had you busy. Well as you know, I will/can be of no help whatsoever with your prob, way out of my league :-( - but i really hope somebody else will come to your aid, must be a tough one to have you stumped ;-). Anyway I just wanted to say welcome back and hope you(your computer) are back up and running so you can come back and join us soon :-) and if not have a really good xmas and new year :-)

2002-12-11 08:48:00 | I am sorry to say it your motherboard........ it could be a fault in the PSU or maybe RAM (try a boot-up with no ram) but i would put my $$ on the mother board. sorry......

2002-12-11 08:54:00 | Do you want to tell us what motherboard you have? I don't live in Auckland but have dealt with PBTech in Auckland and Hamilton. PBTech in Auckland are in Penrose. I can't remember the exact address of the shop. If it was me I would take all cards out of the Motherboard. Insert RAM... Making sure it's in slot 0 or 1. Insert Video card. Does it boot?

2002-12-11 08:58:00 | Thankyou for the nice comments J - will get back on PF! asap, but need to get my PC going, and th exmas rush at work over with first. I have been boarding for the last few weeks in Papakura, and so no internet, etc, and no time to sort everything out. I move into my new place this Saturday, and will hopefully get all of my belongings moved from Dunedin before work starts in the new year. I a loving my new job, and although the traffic is depressing, I am getting used to it. My new place is only 1700m from where I work, so that will ease the tentions a little bit - no more motorway in the morning!!!. If any one knows of a good, reliable etc PC repairer in sth akld esp Papatoetoe, could they please let me know. Eternally grateful G P P.S.> who else though Chris K's comment about my handle in this months PC World a little cheeky - at least mine is unique (I am one of the few regs who actually uses his real full name).
