2002-12-13 07:40:00 | I have Windows XP Professional. Currently I have the little Download icon in the task bar and it says it is downloading updates 4% complete. Now what in the world is it downloading? I have not authorised it to download anything today. When I right click the icon the only option available is Pause. I have a feeling it is stuck on 4% too as that is the only figure I have seen since arriving home 5 mins ago. I tell a lie it has now jumped to 5%. Has anyone got any ideas? | Oxie (1318) | |
2002-12-13 07:47:00 | Hey These downloads are Windows Updates... In an attempt to make Windows less holier than the hope Microsoft publishes these for "your safety" - however there are a few dodgy EULA's so be wary of them - also make sure you never download drivers... It's always best to get them from the manufacterer To disable these "updates" go: Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates then click "Turn off Automatic Updating - I will update my computer manually" CyberChuck

2002-12-13 07:52:00 | Thanks Cyberchuck, but I have always been asked before if I want to download and install the Windows updates. I think I have gremlins in the computer. It got to about 7% and then the icon vanished and task manager stopped installing. By the way I don't have an option under Start, Control Panel called Automatic Updates. Where else might the settings for Automatic Update be stored in Win XP Pro?

2002-12-13 07:56:00 | It should be: Start > Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates Mike.

2002-12-13 08:05:00 | You are right Tweake and Mike It is set to Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to install. I presume it is better to change it to Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing them on my computer. Am I correct? I am on ADSL but either this is one HUGE file or the Internet is at a crawl as the icon is back but still showing 7%.

2002-12-13 08:32:00 | It does it to me too although I've got mine set to download them but notify me before installing them . I had everything updated a couple of days ago and it started downloading more this morning so I went to the update site to see what was there . Almost had kittens when I found out there's another 9MB lot expected to come through . :O Tried to download them manually but it got stuck after just 1MB so I cancelled it to have another go at a hopefully quieter time . What I'd like to know is how to save them all so I don't need to re-download them if I need to reformat again one day .

Susan, Go to Windows Update (v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and in the left hand menu under "Other Options" click on "Personalize Windows Update". Place a tick next to "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also" then click save settings (on right hand side). Windows Update Catalog should now be displayed under "See Also" in the left hand menu. Click on it and you should be taken to a search page where you choose your windows version etc. (I'm going through these steps from memory as the latest version of windows update crashes Internet Explorer on my PC if i try to view the Windows Update Catalog - so please excuse me if something is a little off track.) All the updates for windows should be displayed in your search results under the three(?) headings. Just choose the ones you want/need and download. Hope this saves you some time in the future :). |
