| 105653 | 2002-12-13 06:24:00 | From Newsroom.co.nz Friday the 13th has turned out to be a nightmare for power companies and emergency services in Hawkes Bay. Gale force winds have taken down power lines across the region, with two houses being set alight in the town of Clive, according to power company officials. Lightning strikes in Clive hit power lines, sending a 17,000 volt surge straight to the two houses, causing them to catch fire. Now, I would like to see your $59 surge protector after that little number. |

| 105654 | 2002-12-13 06:41:00 | Interesting God Funny thing is though, I thought our high voltage power reticulation was 11kV/33kV/66kV/110kV and 220kV. I wonder where we got 17,000 volts from, or is it just shonky reporting? Cheers Billy 8-{) :D |

| 105655 | 2002-12-13 06:57:00 | There is a prepoderance of 22 kV as well now. None of them line up well, but its not the lightning, as they cant measure that! Its more likely to be 19 kV (one phase of 33kV to ground) But I only report it, not write it. Mind you, the voltage drop would be severe, given the low impedance of a houseload of appliances failing to cope. for a brief flash it may have been 17kV! |

| 105656 | 2002-12-13 07:43:00 | Power was off till 2.30pm,which was handy for me.I had to rejoin underground cables that failed yesterday, and as the whole farm was dead I managed to get it done before the power came back on.Another bit of useless info! :-) |

I know you don't write them, but aren't you supposed to be in charge of ordaining these things ?:| My admiration for the breadth of your knowledge continues to grow daily, there is a breadth of experience there that leaves me gasping. I'm not kidding now either :| Cheers Billy 8-{) |

Actually it probably wouldn't matter a lot if the surge protector failed in that situation. The neighbour's house burnt down a couple of months back. I heard the firemen had a certain amount of difficulty determining which item was the frig. |
