105596 2002-12-13 00:26:00 How do I use ocr software. I have an HP scanner and ocr is incorporated with the drivers etc on the installation disk. Is it supposed to work automatically or do I have to do something. I cant find any way to use it.
When I scan from newspapers or from typewritten documents and then try to put them into Word, all I get is a big mess.
All I can do is treat them as an image file and they will open in Paint. But then I can't edit them or resize etc.
I'm quite happy to buy another OCR program, but is it going to be any better?
Jack.

105598 2002-12-13 00:58:00 When you scan your page/item you need to specifiy what the scanner is to scan and then choose what type of output you desire. For example my scanner will do a preview of the page then I can select either the text and tell it to output the results to Word, or I can select the pictures and tell it to output to Paintshop Pro or whatever.

It can only be automatic to a certain degree - you usually need to tell it what results you want.

The OCR software that comes with scanners is usually a "Lite" version and purchasing the full version will give better results but they're not cheap and they are still not 100% accurate on "challenging" material. I think the best one is TextBridge but I'd have to check my notes on the other PC to confirm that.

Scanning from newspapers is a tricky job for scanners at the best of times as the print isn't always that clear and the columns confuse the programs sometimes. What I do is select one column at a time to scan and that gives better results but it is time consuming if you have a lot to scan. Sometimes I can type it all out faster than I can scan it. :D

Typewritten documents should give better results than newspapers.

105599 2002-12-13 04:08:00 Not sure about the bundle with HP, but almost certainly OCR will be a separate program from that which you use for scanning a picture.
For example the bundle which came with my Canon has Omnipage and that has to be started if OCR is required, you cant scan in "jpg" picture mode and then convert with OCR.
So look for the program, maybe in the Start Menu that is for OCR.
