105550 2002-12-12 21:32:00 hi,
i'm planning to purcahse a new video card...

anyway, i need some advice.

What would i be better to do,

get a Geforce 4 Ti 64mb ddr
or
a GeForce 4 MX 440 128mb ddr
(both same price)

do u really need the extra memory (i play alot of games, AMD 1700 xp)
but is the chip more important?
cheers

105551 2002-12-12 21:53:00 Hi,
I have a GF4MX440 64mb and i believe you can't get one with 128mb of RAM?? prove me wrong but i'm sure none of the MX's have 128mb of RAM, i'm happy with my 440, it plays all the games great and its cheap enough to upgrade it something else in a years time when it starts slowing down a bit

p.s. if your gonna go for a really good graphics card wait for the Nvidia FX next year!!!

the new FX ones that are coming out - they will be REALLY expensive right?
and, when they come out, will that pull prices down for teh MX's and Ti's??
So am i better to wait till they come out (when will that be)

105553 2002-12-12 22:05:00 i doubt the 2 video cards prices are the same. if they are you would be best to actually post some details about them. eg model no and specs.

the MX series is the budget range and normally a whole lot cheaper than the Ti series.

105554 2002-12-12 22:12:00 Ive read great reveiws on the Ti range, but if you're really wanting big FPS, then the Raedon 9700 is the best I know of at 128MB but that's more top-of-the-line, go for the Ti card. I didnt know that the MX series was out in 128MB? Chilling_Silence (9)
105555 2002-12-12 22:15:00 BTW, I too have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and a GeForce 4 MX and I get great rates at 1024x768 on Unreal Trounament with all the FX turned at MAX, even thru my TV (love the TV Out feature)!

Only thing is mine is a 64 MB GeForce MX 440, so this 128MB one should preform better!

Cheers

105556 2002-12-12 22:20:00 You can't really compare GeForce4MX and GeForce4TI Graphics cards because they use different 3D API (Processing) technology.
GeForce4 MX is based on the older DirectX 7 technology while GeForce4 TI is based on the newer DirectX 8 technology.

Right now, 3D games are starting to benefit from 64MB graphics cards to store twice as much (temporary) 3D data and therefore the ablility to present high quality textures. There isn't any game out yet which uses the full 128MB but in the future there probably will be.

If you play newer games which use DirectX 8.1 technology, go for GeForce4 TI based graphics cards. Fast FPS, great looking graphics.

If you don't play newer DirectX 8.1 games, GeForce4 MX is a good choice.

105557 2002-12-12 22:34:00 Do not bother with any MX series cards as they are crippled ti cards (less pipelines and less graphics API support). They were produced to fill the cheap niche in the market (which they do well) but they are not capable of what a real card (ti) is capable of.

As to the 64mb/128mb question. Nothing in the way of software that might be able to use 128mb onboard ram has been relesed yet (unless you count real high end graphics manipulation software) and nothing will be released till the end of next year (all gamer )and then only 1-5 pieces of software. So having 128mb is a waste of time unless you are into bragging and by the time its useful the GeForceFX would have been superceded by the next generation of graphics card and will have dropped in price so you can then upgrade from the 64mb DDR ti card to the FX chipset cheap.

105558 2002-12-12 23:35:00 very unlikely they'll be the same price .. MX series are cut down versions of the Ti series. Even if they have a 128MB MX card ( which i don't think they have ) the Ti 64MB will have it for breakfast. :D SKT174 (1319)
105559 2002-12-13 00:44:00 If you look around you will see that yes some places are selling 128MB GF4 MX440s. But give me a 64MB Ti anyday. -=JM=- (16)
