105509 2002-12-12 20:16:00 When I first boot up my pc in the morning, it almost always false starts - ie: the cd roms make noise but it gets stuck in this initial phase (it doesn't beep and monitor doesn't fire up). Basically I power it down and up again and it always goes next time. Is this something to do with the boot up sequence in BIOS? rocktap (2759)
105510 2002-12-12 20:48:00 look like a hardware problem. if still under warranty, take it back. yang11 (170)
105511 2002-12-12 20:51:00 unfortunately its an older box, slowly upgraded over time. rocktap (2759)
105512 2002-12-12 21:32:00 what hardware and OS ? tweak'e (174)
105513 2002-12-12 21:50:00 Windows XP (was playing up before when I was Win 2K). Celeron 1000mhz chip, ASUS motherboard, Sony DVD Rom, Mustek CD Writer (old), floppy disk (very old). New hard drive. It sounds like one of the CD drives is 'searching' (both activity lights flash as its powering up. rocktap (2759)
105514 2002-12-12 22:02:00 details dude, details. what motherboard, what video card etc.

you can check the boot order in the bios but i doubt thats the cause unless one of the cd drives is going faulty. just make the first boot your harddrive. also make sure the floppy disk check is off.

however seeing as u have no display i would guess its a video card/ motherboard problem.

105515 2002-12-12 22:12:00 The power supply could be the problem. ie. not enough Watts for what you have installed. mikebartnz (21)
105516 2002-12-12 22:18:00 The motherboard is an ASUS TUSI-M with onboard video and sound, SIS AGP graphics chipset. I've made HD the first boot option and floppy disk check is disabled. The motherboard is new but the DVD and CD writer are quite old now. rocktap (2759)
105517 2002-12-12 22:26:00 It is ATX, not the older AT type but that is a possibility. rocktap (2759)
105518 2002-12-13 00:53:00 Sounds like it could be an aging power supply to me. Disconnect some loads and see if it boots. I had a well loaded box with an old power supply that finally decided it wouldn't boot unless I unplugged a parallel port lead. (Go figure!) All was well when I upgraded the PSU.

They can have difficulty providing the initial start up current surge when they get older, but have no problem sustaining the normal loads once underway.

I'm like that myself of a morning. :8}
