105634 2002-12-13 02:08:00 I recently replaced my PC motherboard with a KA11 replacement . The USB ports won't work .

I am running Windows 98 OS . Device Manager is reporting a problem with the USB Root Hub giving the message "The NTKERN . VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)"

I have tried reloading the driver and it gets part way through before Win 98 crashes with a fatal exception error in VXD NTKERN . I have tried removing the USB components in Device Manager and rebooting . The drivers etc . seem to load OK, but Device Manager still reports the problem .

I have checked the motherboard BIOS and it is the most recent version .

I have reloaded Win98, all to noavail .

Any ideas?

105635 2002-12-13 02:30:00 Is that W98 or W98SE? A recent post mentioned that W98 dosesn't support USB and a minimum of W98SE was needed. That surprised me as I thought everything from W95 B? could support USB. Hopwever, if that's true then that could be your problem. I assume that your previous MB didn't have USB.

Cheers

105636 2002-12-13 02:48:00 Have you loaded the VIA 4 in 1 drivers? wuppo (41)
105637 2002-12-13 03:25:00 Definately need 98se - also check BIOS - Advanced Chipset Features - that "on chip USB" is enabled.

105639 2002-12-13 03:56:00 This problem occurred very recently with Chilling Silence, I wonder if he resolved it?

This site has a USB trouble shooting section and links to downloading the Via 4in1 drivers:

Microsoft also have something to say about ntkern.vxd code 2 error:

105640 2002-12-13 20:53:00 Thanks for the advice. Problem now solved using the Microsoft Knowledge Base referred to. This gave instructions on how to re-copy the USB driver files etc. from the Win98 disc. Rebooting the PC, and reloading the drivers caused everything to come right.

What I don't quite understand is, when I reloaded Win98 previously, these files weren't fixed up then. Maybe if it sees the files already there it doesn't reload them.

105641 2002-12-13 22:07:00 I cant work it out either, as surely these files are loaded when windows is installed, especially if USB is enabled in the bios. Possibly if usb is not enabled, then Windows doesnt load the drivers at that time.
Microsoft dont say how it can come about the wrong drivers can get loaded, or possibly corrupted in some way, it's quite odd.

105642 2002-12-14 01:55:00 People still get problems with parallel printer ports. :D

USB ports are a "recent" thing ... so you've got software/hardware/plug&play, each with different ways to stuff things up. Just hope to be lucky ;-)

As for the "standard" RS-232 for serial connections :_| :_| and I've had 30 years experience with that.
