106522 2002-12-16 04:28:00 I have a compaq 700 ap laptop running win xp home edition
I want to use this as the host and connect my older desktop by cable
Yes both computers have ethernet cards and i have tried crossover and patch cables. THe problem is that the xp laptop it will not detect the cable plugged in. So i cannot run the wizard to set up the connection as it cannot see the connection. I did run the wizard to try it but to no avail. The older computer is quite happy and sees the network the sole problem is having the compaq laptop see the cable.
I have searched the compaq site and found the same problems but no answers. I have downloaded new driver for the reaktek RTL8139/810 network card as well
Also disabled the power save for the network card but nothing works.
Please can anyone help.

106523 2002-12-16 04:36:00 It can't see the cable? You mean that on the back of the network card the connection light does not come on?
If so then i reckon your network card probably cost you about $30 the cheaper ons have problems with the little conectors at the end of the plug.
Can be fixed by pulling the card out and pushing down the connectors on the card with a very small screwdriver or even a pin.

If your cable has the light on and you just can't browse the network, ensure that your dns is set to 255.255.255.0
and that your workgroup is the same as the other computer, and that you have file and printer sharing enabled.

106524 2002-12-16 04:48:00 I see that this is a fairly new laptop --- is it still under guarantee? If so, and the following stuff is no help, it would be worth going back to the vendor.

It has "Fast Ethernet" NIC ... is this 10/100 or 100 Mbps only? I wonder if your older computer has only a 10 Mbps card, and this is the problem, although I would hope for some error messages. :D

You should use the crossover cable.

If the NIC is dual speed, can you set it to be fixed at 10 Mbps?

Yep this could cause the problem also. by default network cards are set to auto for speed detection. So the faster one would downgrade itself. However try my solutions first, and if they don't work then set both cards to 10 full duplex. (under the network card in network properties)

106526 2002-12-16 08:49:00 im not sure what you mean about lights on - there is no light on either pc the card in the older pc is a 100/10Mbps Fast Ethernet Card
So am i correct in assuming that my laptop shows that no cable is plugged in because there is not a connection being made to the other computer rather than that it is not detecting the cable as plugged in.

106527 2002-12-16 09:16:00 Have you verified that both network 'cards' are shown without problems in Device Manager?

For XP to indicate a network connection, the cable must be plugged into a 'valid' network device, at the other end from the XP connection. A cable simply plugged into the laptop will not be recognised as a network connection.

what settings are you useing?

do both pc's reconise their own network card?

106529 2002-12-16 09:36:00 Yes both pcs recognise there network cards in device manager and both say they are functioning properly as suggested earlier i have set them both to 10 full duplex debbie (2791)
106530 2002-12-17 04:19:00 without lights on the back of your cards it is hard to tell whether you have set up your network wrong, or if the cable is faulty. If it is a bought cable it is likely its working ok. Therefore your problem is your setup. I think tweake has refered you to a site that will help you out. roofus (483)
106531 2002-12-17 04:24:00 Id say the NIC might be faulty, can you plug it into another network (Say, At work) and check it!? Chilling_Silence (9)
