106379 2002-12-15 23:02:00 I know there are probably heaps of references to Slingshot Internet on this forum, but I want to get some fresh comments from users on how they stack up, and how good their internet stability is.

They are now Nationwide, and advertising flat-rate internet for $16.95 per month. I think you also get a free month when you join.

The saving over Xtras $27.95 is pretty apealing, but if its a slack/slow service I would rather pay the extra

All comments gratefully accepted

106380 2002-12-15 23:05:00 Personally I dont use it (Ihug..) But I have a few friends who connect first time every time and Ive seen them connect at 56.2K/bps (Possibly dependant on their home conditions though).

They seem reliable, as these people do long night downloads, and from what I've been told, their helpdesk is pretty friendly too, but sometiems has some long queues.

But again, I use Ihug, so this is only what I've recently heard.

They've won Netguide's ISP of the year several times, so that has to be good :-)

Cheers

106381 2002-12-15 23:10:00 Hey

A few of my friends use it and they're always connected and downloading something (which qualifies as leaving it on as long as it takes to get the file) so it can't be that bad.

I wouldn't worry too much about slingshots helpdesk... All you need is their dialup numbers and us friendly people at PF1 :D

That's my 2 cents worth

106382 2002-12-15 23:17:00 I have a friend that uses slingshot and he has no problms with it, I use IHUG, but am thinking of changing over to slingshot aswell, I heard that the only bad thing is you have to pay for your downloads, is this correct?? but it looks pretty good, and the conection speed is always higher than IHUG....

106383 2002-12-15 23:55:00 That's kinda stupid isn't it...

Because when you visit a website you are technically downloading it from the WebServer - so do you have to pay for that?
And doesn't that defeat the purpose of unlimited 56k internet access??

106384 2002-12-16 00:12:00 I have been with slingshot for most of this year,In wellington ealier this year we had lots of trouble establishing connections & staying connected.
After much complaining & the threat of taking them to Fairgo by a friend of ours, they finaly sorted the problem out .
Download speeds are good,I get anything up to 5.7kb/s.
My Bro-in-law has been using them for 2years with no problems in Christchurch.
& No you don't have to pay for downloads,But you do have to pay for 3 months in advance.
Also Slingshot automaticly makes you reconnect after 12 hrs wheres xtra is 24hrs.
I say go for it Baldy $10 a month in your pocket has to be good.
Cheers Steve

106385 2002-12-16 00:30:00 I've been using Slingshot since they started. Never had any problems with them, fast downloads, no problems connecting. segfault (655)
106386 2002-12-16 04:31:00 Key thing to remember is that sure you can connect at 5.2k or 5.7k as someone reports, but the thing is the bandwidth you have.
You may notice that there aren't many ISP's these days where you would get a busy signal. Its cause modems are so cheap to buy or rent that they don't become the main cost. It moves to the bandwidth.
EG.
Slingshot at 7pm has a bandwidth of 100units per 20 users
whereas xtra may have 130units per 20 users.
While you connect at 5.2k to each of them, your download from xtra would be quicker as they have more bandwidth to service your needs.

I have been with slingshot and experience the above scenario. Although this was about a 1.5 years ago.
But it's something to keep in mind when deciding what price to pay.
Also check to make sure they don't ban or cripple MP3 or P2P software. This is usually done by cheap ISP's to lower there international traffic costs.

I'm sure this will be valuable to you :-)

106387 2002-12-16 06:09:00 I was with slingshot 1.5 years ago also, 50ks out of chch and had to dial about 20-30 times everytime to get on (as did a neibour too) and even now if I dial i4free (which is the same number) I get the engaged tone!

so I recomend clearnet which is 150hrs for $15 and I've had no problems with...

106388 2002-12-16 06:17:00 I've been with Slingshot since the beginning and apart from a bad patch after ZFree closed they have been excellent.

Good connection and download speeds plus unlimited access for $16.95/mth made them a better choice than Paradise for me (cause i never needed to use the telephone helpdesk with Paradise.)

You can always cancel if you don't like their service.
